So if you saw my q-post a few nights ago then you already know that I’ve returned to D-toid after a month and a half long hiatus. So instead of writing thousands of q-posts explaining where I’ve been or what I’ve been up to, I decided to write a blog explaining all of that and maybe more. So let’s begin!
Where the hell have I been:
Well to be blunt, I exiled my self off D-toid and to the discord. As to why well I don’t want to drum up drama but to make a long story short, a few people on the main site were being assholes so I left.
Though I’ve also been busy with school work and getting ready for graduation. As of this writing it’s been 3 days since I graduated from my school. Now you’re probably think what school I went to well it’s called the Joe Kubert School. Essentially it’s one of the only schools in the US that specializes in teaching art in comics and commercial illustration. It was founded in 1977 by the legendary artist and the school’s namesake.
I found out about it 5 years ago after Joe Kubert passed away and decided to enroll there to become a full time student in 2014. Though it wasn’t easy passing, trust me my anxiety was at it’s peak during my time there and the amount of assignments due at the same time would drive any sane person crazy.
But in the end I passed and graduated. The ceremony was nice both Adam and Andy Kubert were there (of which both were my teachers in narrative class). As was my other teachers, some of which you may know. Of course the best part of the ceremony was the legendary Neal Adams giving us a commencement speech. Overall it was a lovely graduation.
As of this writing I had just come back from finishing the move out of the mansion which is where I’ve been living for the past 3 years. All of the fun moments I’ve had at Destructoid in that time was in that mansion and I’ll miss living there even with all of it’s problems.
Anyway I’ve also had a few portfolio interviews with many publishers. Most were alright but I think I did well with Scholastic and Marvel Publishing (aka the non-comic part of Marvel). Last week we took a trip into the city to see Valiant comics. Their offices were small but the people there were really nice and gave me some good pointers. They also gave us pizza and stacks of comics. Afterwards we went to a Japanese book store called Kinokuniya books. It was a great place and I got a few things I’ll mention later but overall it was a good trip.
Other than that it’s been a crazy month and a half. Though it wasn’t always good especially when the pressures of school became overbearing. There was a point sometime last week where I just lost it and curled up into a ball on the floor of a shower rocking back and forth telling myself that I was a failure. Even when everyone was telling me I was going to graduate I kept telling myself that I wasn’t and that my life was ruined. This is a feeling I wouldn’t even wish upon my enemies. It’s a dark and lonely feeling where you think everyone hates you, it’s an abyss that feels inescapable. I’m glad I’m past this chapter and I’m looking forward to the future.
Games:
Honestly I haven’t played any new games. I was going to get Person 5 but I had to cancel my preorder due to money. I picked up God of War Collection for the Vita and replayed GoW1&2. Now it’s not the first time I’ve played those games, hell I already own the PS2&3 versions but I wanted to play them on the go so. Speaking of the Vita, I finally got my hands on a 16GB Vita memory card which I’m really digging. It feels good to fit all of my PS1, PSP & Vita games on one memory card. Though I still have the 8GB card in case I need more space. I also finished the first Gravity Rush and the DLC. I loved it but the motion controls took some getting used to. Though as I got closer to graduation I found myself playing less games.
After finishing Doom (2016) I was in a mood to play the other games so during spring break I played through Brutal Doom 1&2, speaking of which I can’t wait for V21, and Doom 3 BFG which I gotta say was a bit better than the original because you no longer have to switch between the flashlight or gun.
Oh and I still haven’t bought a Switch or Breath of the Wild. In fact since I haven’t played them I’ve started to think that maybe they don’t actually exist and are just products of my imagination. If so then I have one damn good imagination.
Anime:
Now this is one I’ve been able to follow. Now if you’ve been visiting the Weeb-Shit channel on Discord then you know that Gundy has introduced me to an anime that’s become one of my favorites this year, that being Kemono Friends. Don't worry I’m going to keep the Komono Friends shitposting to discord but let me tell ya it’s the prefect anime for memes, shitposting and annoying Bass.
I've also finished Dragon Maid and KonoSuba 2.
As for others well I started watching older stuff. Mainly anime I used to watch like YuYu Hakusho, Slayers and Dragon Ball Z. but I got into a series most of you are familiar with.
Aw yeah Mobile Suit Gundam. Now I haven’t watched a Gundam series in over a decade. The last one I remember watching was Gundam Wing when it was on Toonami but other than that it’s been ages. So I began from the beginning with the original MSG and I’m going to work my way down the order of release. So far I’m almost done with MSG and I look forward to Zeta Gundam.
Speaking of Gundam I also bought by first Gunpla model, the HGUC RX-78-2. Of course it wasn’t the only one. Remember that Japanese book store I told you about? Well from there I picked up another Gunpla, this time it’s the HG Iron-Blooded Orphans STH-05R Rouei. Now I haven’t watch IBO yet but it’s on my list of Gundam series to watch, right next to Turn A Gundam and G Gundam.
My first Gunpla. I still need to learn how to pose these things better.
TV:
I don’t watch much TV these days but I was able to keep up with the new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and I loved it. I liked that it tried to stand on it’s own instead of trying too hard to copy the Joel or Mike eras. Jonah did a good job being host and I liked the new voices of the bots. Also really liked the film selection, I was genuinely pleasantly surprised they covered Starcrash and Reptilicus speaking of which that Kaiju Rap is still stuck in my head.
But other than that I haven’t watched much because as mentioned before I was busy with school work and MST3K is perfect for when you need background noise during work.
Movies:
Once again I haven’t seen much, still need to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Kong: Skull Island. Though I did get to see Crimson Peak which was excellent. I love Guilermo Del Toro’s work so this was really up my ally. Speaking of which I heard he’s doing a Haunted Mansion movie. I really hope that turns out well, the Haunted Mansion is my favorite Disney ride and the 2003 movie was just terrible.
Though I plan on seeing Guardians of the Galaxy 2 this weekend and I'm watching Rouge One as I'm writting this.
In Summary:
I’ve been really busy. It’s been a long and hard journey but it’s not over yet. I still have jobs to find, webcomics to start and shit to clean up because I’ve come home with a ton of stuff.
Though I can’t end this without showing off some of my work. So with I want to thank you all for reading this and for welcoming me back. Until then my friends, have a nice day.
