Super Smash Bros on Switch - New Challengers

   0

Super Smash Bros on Switch is almost a given. Almost. It’s a massively popular series and a system seller that the Switch could definitely use (if not need) to get even more people on board the Switch train. On the other hand, Masahiro Sakurai may not want to make a Switch version. And for some reason that is an actual issue for Nintendo. Granted, the man has made four (five if you count the Wii U/3DS version as separate entries) great entries in the series so far. But I’ve never understood why Nintendo insists on him always being the one to direct them. But anyway I’m rambling. None of this is the point of this blog. So what is the point?

This: If a Switch Smash Bros does come out (most likely as an enhanced port of the WiiU/3DS version) one of the biggest questions is what new characters will be added? I will attempt to offer some possibilities. From ones that are very likely, to the ones that seem very unlikely, but are not completely out of the realm of possibilities. It’s important to note these are not the characters I personally want the most. These are the ones I think are the most likely to make it in. Let’s get started.

Very Likely

Travis Touchdown

Travis Touchdown (No More Heroes) - A new No More Heroes game is on the horizon. So if a new Smash were to happen Travis being on the roster is actually quite possible. The only thing he has going against him in his games being M-rated and with Bayonetta already in Smash that is really not even and issue anymore. Although they might have to tone down his (ahem) “recharging” animation. At any rate, I think the chance of seeing Travis in Smash is actually very likely. And that’s awesome.

Splatoon Inklings

Inkling (Splatoon)- This is a no brainer. Splatoon is a wildly successful new IP for Nintendo and they’d have to be crazy not to include an Inkling character in the next Smash, port or new entry. The inklings are colorful, fun, and a perfect fit for Smash. I have no doubt we’ll see an Inkling in the next Smash. The real question for me is what the alts for them will be. Now most will assume we’ll get 4 male inklings, and for female inklings. But I hold out hope for Callie, Marie, Pearl, and Marina alts as well as maybe an octoling one too. I mean, why not? They’d hardly be the first Smash character to have more than 8 alts.

ARMS

An ARMS character (ARMS) - Okay, I know I’m being a bit vague here. But in my defense it’s a bit hard to pick one character for this one. I’m not sure which ARMS character is the most likely to make it in. I know Min Min and Twintelle are quite popular, but neither are exactly the “face of the series”. That would probably be Spring Man or Ribbon Girl. And I’d be fine with either of those. There’s also a small possibility of them being able to Bowser Jr. the ARMS representative and have one slot that lets you use 8 ARMS characters through alt skins. That would mean making them all play the same, thus not having their own unique skills and abilities. But on the upside, we get Min Min and Twintelle!

Possible

Shovel Knight

Shovel Knight (Shovel Knight)- Hey, remember when the Shovel Knight amiibo got leaked out and everyone started freaking out, assuming he was going to be announced as the winner of the Smash character poll? Well the reason why that happened is obvious. Shovel Knight is a pretty darn popular character. Heck, he’s already in how many other games, right? Why not Smash? I know there’s a demand there, so it’s quite possible we’ll see him in the next Smash entry. And the upcoming new Shovel Knight amiibo do make me even more sure about it’s likelihood.

Shantae

Shantae (Shantae) - The Shantae series has been growing in popularity as of late, and you can get every entry on Nintendo consoles. So Shantae is quite a good choice for a new character. She also would fit right in with the rest of the cast. Plus she’s cute as shit! I know her last game wasn’t quite as good as it could have been, but even so I still rate her possibility of being in Smash high enough to call it possible. Like with Shovel Knight I know the demand is there as well. Fingers crossed!

Azure Striker Gunvolt

Gunvolt (Azure Striker Gunvolt)- Once again, the Azure Striker Gunvolt series has become fairly popular, it’s games are on Nintendo consoles, and so it’s quite possible that Gunvolt could make it on a future Smash roster. It would be kind of cool to see Gunvolt go up against Mega Man seeing as how the Blue Bomber is part of the inspiration for the series.

Yarn Yoshi

Yarn Yoshi (Yoshi's Wooly World) - Now, I know that with Yoshi already in Smash, Yarn Yoshi’s chances are a little hurt here. But Dr. Mario and Dark Pit have spots on the roster. So why not one more clone with a few subtle differences here and there? Their yarn ball could have some small differences to Yoshi’s eggs. Like tying up opponents. I don’t know. But with a new Yarn Yoshi game coming out, I think this is possible. Maybe only as a new alt for Yoshi, but still.

Xenoblade 2 Rex

Rex (Xenoblade 2) - With Shulk already in Smash and a new Xenoblade coming soonish, it’s entirely possible that Nintendo might choose to help promote it by including the main character, Rex, as a member of the roster. And knowing that Roy made it into Melee to help promote his (at the time) upcoming Fire Emblem game, this does still make sense. It’s by no means a guarantee, but it is a possibility.

Sylux

Sylux (Metroid Prime) - With Metroid Prime 4 coming, and the unresolved Sylux teaser from Metroid Prime 3, it’s quite likely that the rival bounty hunter will show up in Prime 4. And if so, that would make him a decent possibility to appear in Smash. Plus out of all the possible new Metroid reps, Sylux is the most likely. Now, a new Metroid rep isn’t guaranteed by any means. But Nintendo does seem to want to make up for the lack of Metroid nowadays, so that does make this seem far more likely than ever before.

Not Impossible

Wonder Red

Wonder Red (Wonderful 101) - Wonderful 101 didn’t do well. It’s a shame, because it had some very good qualities. It’s a game that will sadly, probably dies with the Wii U. And thus, Wonder Red making the Smash roster is very unlikely, but not altogether impossible. Flop or not, the character is cool and would easily fit into the Smash roster just fine. So we’ll file this one under not impossible, if incredibly unlikely.

Ridley

Ridley (Metroid) - First, shut up. He’s not too big. Seriously, have you seen how big Bowser is in the (modern) Mario games? Or how small Olimar is in Pikmin. Size is not the issue here. The issue here is simply this. For some reason, lots of people (including Sakurai) just don’t want Ridley playable in Smash. Why? I don’t know. I see no reason why not? He’s got enough demand to put him in, he’s actually more than viable as a potential roster slot, and he’s the most deserving Metroid rep to get one. Yes, I know I put Sylux up there, but that’s only because he’s more likely in my opinion. But still, I maintain that Ridley is possible. After all, Sakurai didn’t want to make Smash 4 either. And yet he did. So it’s just a matter of wearing him down.

MHS Lute

Lute (Monster Hunter Stories) - I’ll admit I base this pretty much solely on the MHS amiibo existing. I know that isn’t the best evidence to use, but hear me out. The game’s doing well. The amiibo too. And Monster Hunter as a franchise definitely has a fanbase large enough to make this one not completely farfetched. Plus imagine his/her Final Smash being jumping on top of a a Rathalos and going apeshit on everyone!

Rabbids

Rabbids (Rayman/Mario x Rabbids) - …as much as I hate to say it, this is unlikely, but possible. Mario x Rabbids has done pretty well for itself and I’d imagine Nintendo wouldn’t be entirely against letting them take up a slot in the next Smash. And honestly, they could actually fit in well enough. I’m not a big fan of the little weirdos, I’ll admit, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible.

Banjo Kazooie

Banjo & Kazooie (Banjo Kazooie) - When asked about it, Microsoft didn’t say no. In fact, they sad they’d be on board with it. So it’s definitely not impossible. Unfortunately, Nintendo would have to approve. And that’s, well…let’s just say probably not happening. I have a feeling their infamous pride would get in the way of this one. But, you never know. Nintendo is unpredictable sometimes.

Yooka Laylee

Yooka & Laylee (Yooka Laylee) - If you can’t have the original, a knock off will do. The game is coming to Switch (I think) and while it didn’t do super well commercially or critically, I wouldn’t rule the possibility out completely. It’s definitely a long shot, but so is Ridley and I put him on here so…

Lana

Lana (Hyrule Warriors) - Yeah. You can see why this is here. While Hyrule Warriors was pretty successful all in all, the chance of seeing Lana make it into Smash is…not good. Not impossible. But still, highly unlikely. There’s already enough Zelda reps, she’s not wildly popular, and Nintendo probably doesn’t even remember she exists. A shame really though, as she could be pretty unique. At any rate, I wouldn’t hold my breath on this one.

Nester

Nester (Nintendo Power) - I can't be alone on this. I remember there being an April Fool's Day joke involving Nester coming to Smash. I also remember some people actually approving of the idea. I was one of them. With Nintendo Power gone (RIP) this would be a nice way to honor it. It would be a great little nod to the iconic magazine and a nice little surprise for old school Nintendo fans.

There are definitely more I could include on this list, but it’s already getting overly long. So I’ll stop here. I hope you enjoyed my list. If you would, please share any other possible characters in the comments. I’d love to hear what other possibilities others might be able to come up with that I didn’t.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was the very first game (I remember) playing. Since then I have been a big fan of the medium.

I'm an avid gamer and aspiring writer. RPGs and platformers are my bread and butter, but I'm also a fair action/adventure guy too. Really there are no genres I outright dislike, just individual games. Every game genre offers something different, and I've come to love the variety. I feel the same way with comics, movies, manga, etc. Not really hung up on "genres", I just like what I like, and I don't care what genre it is.

Recently I've been trying to "break out of my shell" by getting out of my comfort zone and trying things I normally would not. Because of this I have discovered lots of new games, books, manga, shows, and movies that I now love. I do my part now to try to help others expand their horizons and get out of their own familiar space and try new things.

Destructoid has been a big help in getting me to broaden my horizons, and interact with more people outside my familiar circle of friends and acquaintances. I've come to love this site, and look forward to sharing more with you knuckleheads.
