LONG BLOG

Book Club Rebirth (Sort of)

   0

The original Unofficial Destructoid Book Club crashed and burned in spectacular fashion. And that was totally my bad. Sorry again.

But I no longer plan to dwell on the past. It’s time to look toward the future. And what future is that? The new “Book Club”. One that I’ve spent much more time working on, have figured out most, if not all, the kinks before plunging in, and that will be much, much easier for me to manage. So here’s how it will work:

The new “Book of the Month” blogs will function similarly to the Bloggers Wanted format. Each month I will announce that month’s book. I will try to supply links to buy said book, as well as making sure that both physical and digital formats are readily available as well as audio books for those with less time to sit down and read. I’ll try to keep the books from being too long, around 300 pages give or take a little. I’ll also supply a small synopsis of the book and info like genre to help people decide whether or not to participate. Which brings me to the next topic. How do you participate?

Like Bloggers Wanted, it will be up to you, as individuals to decide whether or not read said book and blog about it. How you do so is up to you. Write a review, blog about a character you like or didn’t like, maybe blog about the underlying theme of the story. It’s up to you! This format works out great for me as I no longer have to compile reviews from participants and no one has to feel like they’re obligated to participate. It’s a win/win on both sides!

Additionally, with this format there is a lot more wiggle room to get creative. The “Evil Santa/White Elephant” concept that I toyed with for the original Book Club could be much easier to do now. I could still hold polls for the next book, or theme, or genre that next month’s book would be. I plan on doing some fun things with this idea and I’m open to suggestions for more. So if you have any let me know.

The first true blog will be up next month, November 1, 2017. The book will be the killer hippo book River of Teeth. I’ll have more details (purchase info, synopsis, etc) in that first blog. Until then I welcome any and all feedback or suggestions on this idea so far. I’m looking forward to this as I feel this time I’ve thought the idea through. I’ve been working on this idea since right around the death of the original Book Club. I truly feel that this time it’ll work out.

Thanks again to everyone who supported the original idea. It may not have worked out, but it was a fun experiment all the same. I hope this attempt is more successful.

Former Head of Destructoid's Unofficial Book Club, Former Head of the Unofficial Book of the Month Club, Wes's Unofficial Father, and Self-Appointed Supreme High Priest of #TeamSandwich.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was the very first game (I remember) playing. Since then I have been a big fan of the medium.

I'm an avid gamer and aspiring writer. RPGs and platformers are my bread and butter, but I'm also a fair action/adventure guy too. Really there are no genres I outright dislike, just individual games. Every game genre offers something different, and I've come to love the variety. I feel the same way with comics, movies, manga, etc. Not really hung up on "genres", I just like what I like, and I don't care what genre it is.

Recently I've been trying to "break out of my shell" by getting out of my comfort zone and trying things I normally would not. Because of this I have discovered lots of new games, books, manga, shows, and movies that I now love. I do my part now to try to help others expand their horizons and get out of their own familiar space and try new things.

Destructoid has been a big help in getting me to broaden my horizons, and interact with more people outside my familiar circle of friends and acquaintances. I've come to love this site, and look forward to sharing more with you knuckleheads.
