Let's just forget about all that Instincts, Predator, Evolution business for a moment and salute the upcoming release of Far Cry Primal. It's good to see a company that, yes, regularly releases new versions of their games but no, doesn't overwhelm us with main series releases that lurch from subtitle to number then back again with alarming frequency and all the self-control an innumerate bingo caller.
Rockstar are also good at serving up a varied diet of this with the 'Stories' subset of games on the PlayStation 2 and PSP. It's good to see that developers and publishers can feel confident enough to do this without resorting to the strange lurch the Assassin's Creed series took post #2 whereby we were given Brotherhood and Revelations followed by two further titles with sequel numbers then a following three games with subtitles again.
And let's not even go there with what other celebrated big-name franchises like Resident Evil have done: spin-off titles that end up with their own numbers(!) The mind boggles when you're busy trying to figure out whether or not Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 is worth buying or not and precisely what the difference is in quality between Resident Evils 4 through 6.
Honestly I don't know what I'm trying to prove here beyond Saturday night ranting aside from: please consider consumers, obsessive journalists and gaming historians when designing and naming a game series please, developers and publishers. Numbers aren't always to be feared and subtitles are no guarantee of success. Find a middle path like Ubisoft (Far Cry - NOT Assassin's Creed, mind you) and hopefully we'll all stay happy.
