Torchman's Ask Me Anything Blog

So in celebration of 500 quickposts, a number that indicates I spend too much time proclaiming the truth on this website, I decided to write up an Ask My Anything blog. Also to help reduce my boredom for the week since I've finished school and I'm currently part time until work shifts me back. I reached out to the big old Destructoid community for questions here and here. So without further adieu, and with no regards to order, let's answer those questions!

Also I know that the interview with Strider happened, and some of these questions were answered there, but he actually approached me about the interview after the questions came in! If you want to read that interview, click here! Blame life and my addiction to Super Robot Wars Z3: Jigoku-hen.

23 as of May 9th! That was a good day.

Hmmm... 5 words or less... Ah, I've got it. 'Bruce Wayne in a mech'. There's your 5 word answer.

So story time I guess haha. My first full mecha experience would be good ol' Megas XLR, as that was airing at a time when a young Torch could watch it, and had commercials so he knew of its existence. The only other mecha show I knew for a while was Gundam Seed, but I never touched it due to couple of friends saying it was shit and airing after the parent enforced bed time. Although I hear that's not an uncommon opinion so perhaps I was lucky. After that, I didn't really watch any more mech stuff, due to not knowing what was there, a general aversion to anime at the time, and just plain being busy, with the exception of Pacific Rim.

Then later I watched Gurren Lagann a couple of years after it came out due to hearing so many good things about it. After that was seeing Super Robot Wars Z3 Jigoku-Hen featured in TheSw1tchers mecha week special, resulting in my first exposure to the series alongside almot every series featured within including Big O. You can watch it here if you're interested. After that, well, I think you know what happened from there.

How would someone get into me? Going to go with something like Gurren. Get in me through my giant mouth, only to be greeted by screens informing them their waifu is shit.

Um... Uh... Hm...

Didn't know we were telling jokes here instead of asking questions. Oh you're serious about that? I can't answer a question that is a blatant lie, that's common knowledge good sir.

The cheese will be prepared when Aunt Victoria finally gets rid of that worthless monster known as Uncle George and settles down with that nice man from the post office. I can't remember his name, but people insisted he was called Tim the wolf fucker. Once she does that, then the cheese will be ready.

She'll need at least 5 industrial sized cheese grinders for each person. At least one extra grinder for every 5 people being grinded in case one of the grinders jams or breaks. The best technique for cheese grinder is every once in a while, stop the grinding and beat the shit outta the cheese with a baseball bat. Another good one is to occassionally sprinkle in the blood of your enemies.

The amount of salt in this post, just, just perfect. I'll probably have enough salt to last a month by the end of this.

Also like I said in the interview, Kirby's Adventure. I throw it on every once in a while and happily play away. It's just a solid game all around. Kirby feels great to control, power ups are fun to use, level and sound design is great, and bosses are the right amount of hard.

Foot of my bed this Tuesday. 9 PM EST. Make sure to bring the rum.

There's just something satisfying about giant machinery like locomotives doing even the most mundane tasks, and that only makes it more awesome when cool shit happens. I just can't my finger on it. Like, if you took the scenario of holding up a building that's going to fall over and said 'You get to view one of three variations: A mech holds up the falling building, a superhero holds up the falling building, or someone holds up the building with some dramatic magic', I'm going to take the mech variation everytime.

Look, I know you're still salty about your love for Naoto being revealed as false during the waifu wars, but please, contain yourself until I get another dump truck for all that salt you're spilling.

Also generally just play video games haha. Generally something slower paced and offline. Although sometimes I throw on a show to help as well, usually whatever I'm currently in the middle of.

I wouldn't say I'm too hard to make happy. Am I enjoying myself? If I'm with others, are they enjoying themselves? If yes, then happy. Although a sure fire way to get me happy is to give me a Kirby game.

Don't insult my family, especially if it's not relevant to a conversation. If you're clearly joking, and I can clearly see that, it's fine. But if not, I will absolutely lose my shit.

Waffles are the best breakfast item. They even have craters to let you have resevoirs of that syrup goodness instead of it spilling over the sides onto the plate and possibly being wasted.

Also 100% certain I have two nipples, as I can only cut two diamonds in the cold at any time.

All dogs go to heaven. All of them. You know why? Because fuck cats, they are the spawn of Satan. There's a special place in hell just for cats.

That's basically me in the morning. I'm sure you can figure out what the answer is.

Tits. Hard to be attracted to the thing that shit comes out of.

I think everyone knows what I'm going to say. Although surprise I've got two for you. The Big O and Gurren Lagann. Big O is an interesting noir mech anime that has a unique cast and great mech scenes that really picks up in the later half of season one and just runs with it in season 2. However the show does end on a nasty cliffhanger. Gurren Lagann on the other hand is an amazing tribute to mech anime as a whole, with plenty of homages, and my enjoyment of it increases as I begin to identify what the homages are and where they are from.

I will note though that I'm like 10 episodes into Armored Troopers VOTOMS, an older anime from the 80's, and it looks like it has potential to join those two. If you're wondering what it is, here's a summary of the premise from wikipedia.

"The Gilgamesh and Balarant nations had until recently been locked in a century-old galactic war whose cause was long ago forgotten. Now, the war is ending and an uneasy truce has settled. The main weapon of the conflict is the common Armored Trooper, a mass-produced humanoid combat vehicle piloted by a single soldier. They are known alternately as VOTOMS (Vertical One-man Tank for Offense & ManeuverS).

The series follows a main character named Chirico Cuvie, a special forces Armored Trooper pilot and former member of the Red Shoulder Battalion, an elite force used by the Gilgamesh Confederation in its war against the Balarant Union. Chirico is suddenly transferred to a unit engaged in a suspicious mission, unaware that he is aiding to steal secrets from what appears to be his own side. Chirico is betrayed and left behind to die, but he survives, is arrested by the Gilgamesh military as a traitor, and tortured for information on their homeworld. He escapes, triggering a pursuit extending across the entire series, with Chirico hunted by the army and criminals alike as he seeks the truth behind the operation. He is especially driven to discover the truth of one of the objects he was assigned to retrieve in that operation: a mysterious and beautiful woman who would become his sole clue to unraveling the galactic conspiracy."

Waffles for previous reasons.

That sounds incredibly painful and not worth it.

Rock 'N Roll Train by AC/DC

The 「STAND」 will be called Motorhead. It would be like Hol Horse's stand, exept it would be a megaphone. Those who are caught in the soundwave it projects are tormented by constant, incoherent babbling in their head until the 「STAND」 user has been defeated.

It was Megas XLR that started it, Gurren Lagann that brought back that interest and rekindled it, and then a compilation video of SRW Z3(the one linked earlier) that caused it to become what it is now.

Also damn right you acknowledge the superiority of my waifu.

Give them enough growth hormones, some steroids, and then hang a couple of nudes in the air, and you can get them to jump maybe 2 feet if you're lucky.

My username comes from the name given to Fireman.exe in the English dub of Megaman NT Warrior. That's right, my name is the result of something being censored for the children despite the game it was based off of being uncensored here.

Who was phone? I don't understand? Is that a typo or lost thought?

God damn it, you had to ask the hard one. I think I'd have to say it's either Roger Smith from The Big O, because the character as a whole is fantastic, or Chirico from VOTOMS, because he seems like he's the Kenshiro of mechs so far in terms of personality.

I'd have to say my least favorite is the Eureka Seven cast. I... I just find them boring to be honest, and it's hurting the show as a whole. I know it gets better past season 1 but god damn I just can't do it.

I'd probably cross over Gurren Lagann and Getter Robo. Both of them run off of mysterious energy(spiral energy and getter rays), they slowly escalate with time, and when shit hits the fan, it hits HARD.

Uh... hmm that's a toughie. I mean, the only real ones I can think of are discovering Persona 4 in a bad time, getting a consistent job(regardless of what I think of the job currently) as well as graduating from college. Other than that... meh.

Would totally smooch a red-haired android. Can't go wrong with that.  Also may as well make the first kiss an interesting one.

I love BN. My username comes from Fireman's censored name in the anime dub. Played 1-4 on GBA, barely beat 5 on emulator, stopped near the end of 6 because I wasn't the best with a keyboard for Battle Network. Played all 3 Starforce games, and I do enjoy them. I really do think that Starforce had a lot of potential, and could've been just as good as BN was at it's peak, which was BN 2 and 3. It just got held back by the foolish insistance on doing multi-version, which also hurt BN in my opinion, as well as their rushed development. How rushed was it you may ask? The gap between Starforce 1 and 2 was less than a year, and 2 to 3 was a year. All three entries were most likely done by the same team, and the amount of improvements they made in Starforce 3 over 2 shows that if Capcom had just been willing to let something cook in the god damn oven for once there could've been something great. If you ever want proof of how Capcom ruined Megaman(and Keiji to a degree as he was producer for Battle Network and Executive Producer for Starforce), you go right to BN4-6 which is where Battle Network started going through the motions as well as the entirety of the Starforce series. To drive it in further, remember that Battle Network and Starforce were the series to get animated adaptations, not the platformers, meaning a major financial platofrm was pissed away.

God I hate Capcom so much when it comes to Megaman.

Last good belly laugh was when I went to Deadpool. God that was a good movie. Ryan Reynolds is just perfect in the role.

No comment. That's something I don't want to think about right now.

Final fight in Captain America: Civil War. God damn that was fantastic. Great choreography, the most physical we've seen in the Marvel series, and it just felt like a great payoff to something that had been built up for several movies.

Shepherd's pie is my favorite meal. Just that blend of meat, potatoes and veggies. It just works, and it's fantastic.

Life happened! Super Wars Z3 finally showed up and I became addicted to it! Other things happened! That's why I hadn't written it yet.

I thought Fate/Zero was good. Bit of a downer ending, but it was good. Nice animation, interesting world, fleshed out characters. Might be rewatching it again soon so that might change?

Big O first. Less commitment (26 episodes vs 52), more enjoyable cast imho, more enjoyable first season, it has best waifu, and it has the god damn Big O.

I'm... I'm sorry to have to tell you this sir, but your baby has been taken by the nep-murderer known as Gundy. At this moment, your baby is being shipped out as canon fodder to fight against aliens. There is no hope for it. May in rest in peace along all the nep neps we lost, and serve as a grim reminder that we must stop Gundy at once.

And on that grim note, we reach the end of our questions. Thank you all for them, I really enjoyed answering them, and if you have any more, or if I missed them, feel free to leave one in the comments!
