Featuring Super Mario Land, caribbean music and Mozart.
Greetings fellow game music lovers,
I promised another Mario entry and here it is: Super Mario Land from 1989. It features a soundtrack by Hirokazu Tanaka that, while adhering to the fundamental design principles from Kondo, manages to give the game its own style while not sounding un-mario. The sample from today is rather short, yet often heard: The 7-note jingle that plays upon death:
Currently, I'm aware of two sources where this sample might have come from which may built up on each other.
The first is of caribbean origin like a lot of the Mario music, although it is usuall embedded within a larger progression. Here we go:
Ron Berridge Orchestra - "Simple Calypso" (1970):
And maybe:
Lord Cristo - "Indian party" (1963):
Finally, the jingle occasionally appears in the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart which might be the original source:
Mozart - "Piano Sonata No. 13 in B flat, K. 333":
Mozart - "Keyboard Concerto No. 12 in A major, KV 414":
And the caribbean series continues! Next week!
Phil out.
