Featuring Super Mario Bros. and caribbean music.
Greetings fellow game music lovers,
starting our new series, the focus of the following weeks is caribbean music which, all things considered, was pretty good to japanese gaming music. For starters, we have a look at the original Super Mario Bros. (1985) theme which is known to feature a Calypso backing in its second half:
So for today, I present you a small collection of Calypso songs with comparable backings. Here we go (Note: You have to listen closely to the backing because it tends to be obscured by the vocal part):
Laurel Aitken - "Nebuchadnezzar" (1958):
Boysie Grant w/ The Reynold’s Calypso Clippers – "Noisy Spring" (1951):
Roaring Lion - "Trinidad, The Land of Calypso" ( before 1959 ):
Duke & the Jamaica 5 - "Hungry Woman" (1960):
Lord Kitchener - Alec Bedser Calypso (1953):
This one is technically from 1990 but it sounds relatively clear so I throw it in:
But the caribbean has more to offer! Next week!
Phil out.
