Occam Thoughts: Christmas Music

   0

It's Christmas time!  There's colored lights on trees and bows wrapped around boxes covered in crispy, shiny paper!  Festivities abound!  Children fidget anxiously in church dreaming of the sweet haul waiting for them back home.  Mothers and fathers watch with sleep starved eyes as their children tear into gifts and squeal with delight.  The cats frolick and play in piles of wrapping paper.  A homeless man peers into the window of an upper middleclass family home.  He's furiously masturbating as the family goes on celebrating Christmas day, unaware of the curdled semen now dripping on the azalea bush.  Who was he looking at as he climaxed?  On the Devil knows.

I just read Nanashi's lovely blog about Christmas music and it inspired me to share with everyone some of my favorite music to play during this, the season of the birth of Santa's overlord.  Also, I would like to invite everyone to make a blog to share their favorite music to listen to at Christmas.  Maybe we can all find some new classics this holiday season!

1) The Vandals - Oi to the World

A classic in the Occams household.  I discovered the Vandals in high school and had the pleasure of seeing them perform this little diddy a few times over the years.  When those drums hit at the beginning you just know if motherfucking Christmas.

2) Jingle Cats - Silent Night

Oh Jingle Cats...its as if God heard my whimpering pleas in the night and answered with this song.

3) Vince Guaraldi Trio - Christmas Time is Here

Back when I was a smoker, I would sit outside in the dark and smoke a cigarette with this playing.  I'd just close my eyes and feel the smoke fill my lungs and exhale slowly as I lost myself in this song and the moment. I don't smoke anymore but I still put this on and close my eyes so I can drift on a sea of piano notes and upright bass and that soft brush drum rhythm.  Simply beautiful.

4) David Bowie and Bing Crosby - Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy

This is a bit of a one-two punch.  First off, the video is fucking amazing.  Bing Crosby's little quips are perfect and look at David Bowie with his accent a lot thicker and being all David Bowie.  Then they harmonize really well and and make something really special.  Also, its pretty badass to see the old guard come togther with the (at the time) new school of music and work together so well.  I don't think its been done as well since.

5) Run DMC - Christmas in Hollis

My brother had this record when it came out in 1987.  I remember him listening to it and rapping along while I would play Nintendo and can do that little kid dance where you just move around like you have to pee/have had too much sugar.  That was fun.  All these years later, he still knows the lyrics and now I can rap along with him. This one reminds me of those days and how much fun they were.

Speaking of fun, my father hates this song.  He's more of a traditional Christmas music kind of guy so he sees anything other than the classics as unneccessary and silly.  I like to put this on and when he makes a face I accuse him of being a racist.  He gets all pissed off because he was in his 30's during the Civil Rights movement and remembers seeing a lot of fucked up stuff regarding race.  So he gets all huffy when I claim he's a racist.  You would think after a decade or so of me accusing him of being racist, he would stop reacting to it.  But then I think his reaction is as much for me as anything, like its our thing.  Aaaand now I need to go call my dad and tell him I love him.

So those are a few songs that mean a great deal to me during the holiday season.  Thanks for reading and I look forward to reading your blogs and listening to the songs that mean a lot to you!

Well that certainly sounded dramatic.
