Finished Majora's Mask 3D!

Yay, I'm not blogging about E3! Finished that there Majora's Mask 3D. Overall, I enjoyed my time with it. But, I felt it had some problems, some of which are my fault, some of which are the game's design. Not gonna lie, I haven't been ...

Goodbye Xenoblade Chronicles X

So, I finally finished Xenoblade Chronicles X today. And by "Finished", I mean completed the main story. And by "main story," I mean getting the end credits to roll. That is no small feat, as you have to go through four boss-esque battles a...

I can't put Persona Q down!

The one video game I got for Christmas this year was Persona Q: Shadow the Labyrinth. I waited until Christmas for it for several reasons—my parents needed something to get me, and because I wouldn't've had time to tackle it unt...

Playing Donkey Kong Country Returns

I won't say I've taken a break from Super Smash Bros (one does not simply stop playing Smash) but when not playing that, I've been playing some Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii. My history with this game is a bit strange....

That's the last time I pre-order at GameStop

And shop there too. In the past, I've spoken in favor of GameStop whenever they came up in conversation. I've always felt that, yes, they offer you very little in exchange for your used games, but I've never felt like I was forced to a...

Let's talk about Bayonetta 2's ranking system!

So, I told myself last week that I was done blogging about Bayonetta 2. It was time to move on, I said, and despite the fact that I've played little else since the game was released, surely I had said all I could on the subject. It's a...

Do you need stories in your video games?

I'd like to bring up a discussion I had with one of my video gamer friends a few days back regarding the value of a video game. Specifically, what would justify the purchase of a sixty dollar full-console experience. I was talking abo...

Playing Resident Evil 4 for the first time

I think just about every gamer has heard of the majesty that is Resident Evil 4. Upon its release on the Gamecube, it was heralded as one of the greatest video games of all time. Its revolutionary new camera system, featuring a sharp &...

Comments on recent video game controversies

I've debated with myself numerous times over whether I would chime in on the recent controversies that have been plaguing the video game community. Every time I went to write a post, I always stopped before I started, deciding that I w...

My favorite video game: Sonic 3 and Knuckles

How do you define a favorite video game? Is it the one that filled you with the most inspiration? If that's the case, then the clear winner would be Skies of Arcadia, a JRPG for the Dreamcast that presented a bright world full of wonde...

I bought the Mario Kart 8 DLC

And I have no regrets. I've made no secret about my love for all things Mario Kart, and number 8 is the second best Mario Kart I've played (hard to top Mario Kart DS, a game I bought twice so my brother could play with me). But when Ninten...

I have an addiction to cheap video games

I have a problem. It's a doozy. I have an addiction to cheap video games. But not games like those in the Steam sales. Oh no, I like cheap console games. You see, I don't have a gaming PC (I had to use my work laptop to play Gone Home) so ...

Effin' Finally: I own Skies of Arcadia: Legends

Last week I wrote about how I crossed one item off my video game bucket list, completing The Lion King. But last week actually had me cross something else off as well. The same used video game store had another precious game from my child...

Effin' Finally: I beat The Lion King

My first video game console was a Sega Genesis, purchased secondhand near the end of the console's lifecycle. I remember first playing Sonic the Hedgehog and struggling to get through level one. I remember the weight and size of those first...

Been Playing: Shovel Knight and Gone Home

Since it's summer and I was a former lifeguard, I don't like to keep myself cooped up in the house when the weather is decent. While this is great for my pasty white complexion, it's terrible for my video gaming. Thus, progress on gaming ha...

Let's talk about cutscenes!

Like the title says. Let's do it. I don't know if the term Cutscene has a formal dictionary definition, but I take it to mean those points in video games where the gameplay essentially stops, and a movie of sorts plays. This movie may be...

Nintendo's Bitch

Let me walk you through my experience at E3. And, as you can see by the title, you probably have some idea where this is going. E3 this year really held little interest to me. Too often, I've been let down by game developers making promis...

Getting Possessive of Video Game Characters

I was playing Mario Kart 8 online the other day when I came to a startling discovery. I don't like when other people play as Toad. You see, Toad is my Mario Kart buddy. He and I, we tight. We've been through some crazy tracks together, ...

Been Playing: Xenoblade Chronicles

It is sad that Xenoblade Chronicles has become such a troublesome game to get ahold of. From the difficulty in just getting it released to the rumors of Gamestop price-gouging used copies, the game will likely be remembered more for this th...

I Touched Mario Kart 8 Today

Forgive me for a moment while I go into full-blown fanboy mode. I got to play Mario Kart 8 today. And it was glorious. If you don't know, GameStops across America is doing a Mario Kart 8 Test Drive Weekend promotion thing, where you can g...

I finally played Final Fantasy IX

So, yeah. I like JRPGs. But never played Final Fantasy IX until a month ago. I'm a bad person, I know. Finally, with the help of the Playstation Network, I was able to get my hands on a virtual copy of this game, and see what all the fuss...

There's Something...Off about World of Illusion

Mickey Mouse needs no introduction. His video games, however, do. Back in the late 80s and early 90s, Disney loaned out their beloved character to various video game studios, such as Capcom. Numerous games of varying quality (though general...

About Derek Pietrasone of us since 12:33 PM on 05.03.2014

Derek spends his days trying to keep up with Sonic the Hedgehog, his evenings attempting to jump as high as Mario, and his nights by sneaking into the Ninja Turtles' secret lair in the hopes of getting some special ninja training from Master Splinter.

Among other things.

Born and raised in boring ol' Massachusetts, Derek has felt the call of fantasy from a young age. Proudly declaring that "Reality is boring!" he strives to find new and interesting fantastic worlds with an unmatched drive. He hopes that his works will one day inspire others to explore the fantastical. He welcomes anyone on board for the ride.
