Well, it’s here. This February marks the month where all the big titles delayed their release dates to this point in time. Personally, I’m not as hyped as others about this month, but there is still plenty to anticipate. So with that, here are my top anticipated releases for this month. But before that, some rules.
The game has to release on at least one major systems (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch). I do not count re-releases or remasters, but I may make an exception for remakes. One thing I do count is a game either entering or exiting early access, but that game can only be counted once. If a game has multiple release dates like Destiny 2 or GTA 5, then I will only count the earliest release date. The exception to that is if the game has a pre-order bonus of entering the game early, in which I will count its normal release date. If I put a game in my top five but its release is delayed, I will not qualify it for the top five for its new release month. Finally, it has to be a game, not a DLC. With the rules out of the way, here are my top five anticipated titles of February.
5. Horizon Forbidden West
Horizon Forbidden West by Guerrilla Games is a third-person open-world action game following Aloy as she ventures out to a land called the Forbidden West. I’m a fan of the first game, but I wouldn’t call myself as big of a fan as others. Still, I think the new setting looks cool, the improvements to various parts of the previous game such as combat and platforming look solid, and I think if they largely stick to the first game then it will be more than fine by me. Horizon Forbidden West will release on the 18th for PS5 and PS4.
4. Kingdom of the Dead
Kingdom of the Dead by Dirigo Games is a first-person shooter about an army general who joins a secret government program meant to defeat Death. The most obvious distinction with this game is its pen-and-ink art style, though I think this game looks interesting beyond that. I think the game’s weird west setting looks neat, the combat looks heavy in a fun way, and I’m interested in seeing the level design. Kingdom of the Dead will release on the 10th for PC.
3. Sifu
Sifu by Sloclap is a 3D beat ‘em up about a kung fu student’s lifelong journey of revenge. I bounced off of their previous game super hard because I’m not into learning combos and that style of fighting game in general, but something about this game just tickles my fancy. Whether it be the way the combat interacts with the environment, the aging, or just how fluid and fun that combat looks, this game looks super cool. Sifu will release on the 8th for PC, PS5, and PS4.
2. Elden Ring
FromSoftware’s Elden Ring is the next Souls-like from the Souls-like people about attempting to restore the Elden Ring. More than anything else, I’m looking forward to seeing the difficult Souls-like combat put into more of an open world. I’m also interested in seeing how George R.R. Martin influenced this world and I always enjoy some tough Souls-like combat, so I’m interested in seeing how this game turns out. Elden Ring will release on the 25th for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.
1. Dying Light 2
Dying Light 2 by Techland is the sequel to the hit parkour zombie game about deciding the fate of a human safe haven city 15 years after the events of the first game. I’ve been cautiously optimisitic about this game because despite my love for the first game, this game’s ambition around choice and RPG mechanics sounded a bit too ambitious. It seems like some of my worries are valid with the latest reviews, but I’m still excited nonetheless for its parkour and combat. Dying Light 2 will release on the 4th for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.
That is going to wrap up this list. Thank you for reading, and tune in next month for another set of releases.
