Super Mario Odyssey is just eating up a lot of my free time, so how about another Mario tune from another game. Today’s song is:
Super Paper Mario: World of Nothing
As I’ve said before the Paper Mario series has some of the best creepy music. This song is a bit unnerving, especially when you consider what this song means in the grand scheme of things. The world of nothing is the ruins of the Sammer kingdom swallowed by the void. Even its world heart has turned to stone. People, buildings, life itself, all whipped out in an instant. Just stop for a moment and think about that. Perhaps millions of people with families where just vaporized in a few seconds, and it wasn’t a peaceful few seconds. The atmosphere was already set to “world ending” so it wasn’t like these people didn’t know what was happening. Whether they tried to run or hide in those final moments all of it would be in vain as there was virtually nothing left after the fact.
It is stuff like this that really makes me wonder as to what kind of magic Nintendo employees to have these kinds of dark elements in their games, and yet still maintain an E for everyone.
The song itself hits a few different notes for me. The distorted piano reminds me of old children’s songs. Another thing that comes to mind while listening to this is the aftermath of a bomb. The ringing in the song reminds me of ringing ears, the disjointed tune also fits the chaos one would expect from an area that has just blown up. That is just my take on it though.
