These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things - Episode 8

So this time around I figured I'd throw in some stuff that's actually pretty clever. Most of the time games are fairly predictable, so when one can up and surprise me, it warrants attention. It should be noted that the examples I give wil...

RPG of the Year 2009

It's entirely possible that I missed some games, but I'll say this...this list took me a good 4 hours to put together, therefore, if I missed anything, just let me know and I'll fact check it just in case. I'm confident, however, in the t...

RPG of the Year 2008 (Revision)

We're going to give this another shot...and hopefully Wiki won't be such a dick in the ass this time. For those of you just jumping in, RPGs have been a huge impact on me ranging all the way back to the original Final Fantasy. I apologi...

Epiphany - Shitty Sequels

When I heard there was going to be a new Shadowrun game, I was stoked. I remembered playing the SNES Shadowrun and thinking it was cool, then more recently playing the Genesis version and thinking it was absolutely badass. I couldn't wa...

Under the Scope - Stealth in Videogames

For me, stealth is a very mixed bag. I really appreciate games that allow you to use stealth, but don't completely shove it down your throat with unnecessary and unforgiving trial and error sequences. The early Splinter Cell games were ...

How An Achievement Caused Introspection - Skyrim

Skyrim is a fantastic game where even something as minor as sidequesting can be fun, interesting, and even a well told story all in its own. Some of the sidequests in Skyrim are much more entertaining than the main storyline...so much so...

5 Things I Hate About Skyrim

Skyrim has hit most gamers' Game of the Year for 2011, if not their personal top 10 list. In saying that, I must admit it's one of the finest games I've ever played. There are a few problems, however, that could have been ironed out to ...

FPS of the Year 2003

This is going to be an interesting year. There are 40 games this year. This is going to be an odd year because prior to this writing, I've only played two of these. Let's hop to it! Call of Duty (PC) Well, what can you say? It's the...

Location: Mode 7 Madness

I know they're a bit dated now, but mode 7 and raster effects were pretty impressive effects in the 16-bit era. Most of the time all a game had to do was have a generic mode 7 effect and suddenly it become 500 times more awesome. Many g...

The Fantastic World of Japanese Games - Episode 5

Sometimes the mere mentioning that a game had RPG elements was enough to shelf the idea to bring it over. You're going to see me pulling this excuse a lot because for every Mega Man, Castlevania, TMNT, Mario, Zelda, and whatever title th...

Predictions: I Don't (And Can't) Give A Shit

Early in 2011, my 360 decided to throw a big "fuck you" party and go down for good. Being that this is the brokest I've been in years, I couldn't very well replace it, even though I really want to, but specifically only so I can get back...

The Fantastic World Of Japanese Games - Episode 4

Sometimes a game is deemed "too weird" to come to American soil. This doesn't happen all the time and usually when it does, it's for good reason. I mean, I guess so. I've decided to include youtube embeds on all the game pictures this ...

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things - Episode 7

Once again, there are some spoilers here. And yes, the pics have videos embedded, so if you spot something you'd rather not, don't click! Today I'm mostly going to write about death, destruction, and the apocalypse. However, not all is...

Stupid Shit Non-Gamers Say About Videogames

Above: not really a gamer. Playing videogames isn't quite the same as it used to be, but maybe that's a good thing. People that don't game at all that happen to stumble across our hobby seem to mistake videogames for an actual sport, ki...

FPS of the Year - 2002

This was a great year, but it was hard to select a #1. There are 32 games this year and many of them I would highly recommend...with one I'd say just avoid altogether and try to forget it even exists. Let's hop right in! 007 - Nightfire ...

The Fantastic World of Japanese Games - Episode 3

Far too often a game simply won't be released in America because...well, it's predecessor failed. Now for me, this is never acceptable, but I do understand. If a game has a huge following in Japan AND it's an RPG, but it doesn't really ...

The Fantastic World of Japanese Games - Episode 2

When playing Japanese SNES games on an emulator, often there are obvious and not so obvious reasons why a game may not have come out to America. The best way to think about it is was it an RPG, did it have suggestive themes, and did it h...

The Fantastic World Of Japanese Games - Episode 1

People who understand emulation, even to a small degree, know all about the fantastic world of translated games that never left Japan. Most of the time it was for reasons like RPGs not selling well in America at the time, more mature con...

Resolutions: Mind, Body, and Spirit of a Gamer

Two of the biggest problems I have lately as a gamer are sticking with it until the very end of a game and beating them. Yes, these are two problems and let me explain why. It's very hard for me to focus on a single game at a time. Thi...

Not All Retro Is Awesome - Badlands

Usually when I think laserdisc game with QTE, I think Dragon's Lair. What I don't think is cowboy anime with a hyper ass trigger finger and a level of ridiculousness I've not seen...well, since ever. You can click on the pic above to se...

Xenophilia: Seiken Densetsu 3

One of the few Squaresoft games that has never even attempted to be remade is also easily one of the best. Now sure, I could've talked about the obvious Terranigma, Mother 3, Wonder Project J, Adventures of Hourai High, or even the Front...

You Love It, I Hate It - Grand Theft Auto 4

Back in the 90s I played both the original GTA and GTA2 on my PC. They sucked. Imagine Spy Hunter, but being able to turn in all directions, the camera doesn't adjust, the angle isn't wide enough to see if you're going to run into shit,...

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things - Episode 6

I think this is normally where an intro goes. It's unlikely that you'll read it. That's okay, because I have movies and stuff. And yeah, the movies are hidden in the pics. Enjoy! Super Metroid - Crocomire fi-OH MY GOD Super Metroid ...

Tales from Skyrim: Frailty

When you play an RPG, you're constantly told that you're the chosen one, but still made to feel weak, even though you have incredible powers. It's a constant contradiction. Look, in the Breath of Fire games, you can change into A FUCKIN...

Thankgiving: Notable Gaming Gimmicks (AKA Cranberries)

Something was missing from this last Thanksgiving. Well, okay...a lot was. We're not on speaking terms with my wife's family, my father is down in Florida living it up for retirement, and my super busy mother in Indiana was...well, too ...

About gunsageone of us since 2:58 PM on 04.11.2008

I've been gaming since 1987. I used to be a big Nintendo fanboy, then Square jumped the shark, so I followed. Eventually I realized neither Square nor Nintendo were the only companies out there worth following and my collection more or less speaks for itself now. I love to meet up with people on XBL, though I haven't done much online with the Wii. I've also been writing game review articles since 2004 on the old Project Wonderboy, then Morphine Nation, and now back to the new Project Wonderboy and various other sites.

I also help out in writing for a local videogame store website (VGMX). Not much else to say, really, when it comes to gaming. I wouldn't consider myself an expert, but I would say I'm experienced.
