Finished off the final ending of Drakengard 3 today. I hate this game, but also love it. The final boss was really cool. I never want to have to do it ever again. Also the music for it is great, some of Keiichi Okabe's best work.
Just finished the original Drakengard. It's a strange, ugly, tedious game, but I couldn't help but like it. Very interesting approach to story that goes some wild places. Soundtrack is weirdly compelling too.
Shouting out OneShot for #indietoid A sombre game with an adorable protagonist that breaks the fourth wall and explores the relation between a player and the game in really interesting ways. More recommendations in the comments.
SQUID GAME 3
Decade old hot take, Need for Speed: The Run is pretty bad. I don't know why I can't stop giving these damn games so many chances that they don't deserve.
Finished Legacy of Kain: Defiance. Very good game, liked it a lot. A big shift from SR2 with pros and cons, but on balance I like it about the same. The combat is pretty impressive for the time, but the dialogue isn't quite as great as the previous games.
Finished Soul Reaver 2, loved it. Moved on to Blood Omen 2, but quickly dropped it. It's really bad. So now I'm playing Defiance, and I'm getting whiplash from how much better it is. And the combat is not only really fun now, it actually has depth too!
Finally got Soul Reaver 2 to work! The solution? Buy the GOG version instead... Side note; the dialogue in this game is fantastic.
I've been trying for three days now and can't get Soul Reaver 2 to work. Emulating the PS2 version, the widescreen hack is the wrong aspect ratio and performance is terrible. On PC the widescreen mod doesn't work at all, and it's unplayably buggy.
Picked up a Dreamcast emulator and I'm finally trying out Soul Reaver. Its age makes is hard to acclimatise to, but that theme song is still a banger.
Found this cool looking indie hack-and-slash that just launched a Kickstarter.
Undulate.
Trash mammal.
I'm having a hard time getting in to DMC5 again because my PS4 is so loud I can hardly hear the game. Guess I'm going to have to crack it open and replace the thermal paste.
Decided to jump back into DMC5, and actually try to get in to building combos. It's nothing amazing, but pretty pleased with it as a first attempt. Takes down this guy in a single combo on hard difficulty.
Finally played through Vane. Many years ago I was pretty excited for this, but it got stuck in dev hell and reviews put me off. I liked some parts, but it's a mixed bag. Some great art and atmosphere, but also obtuse and bad at giving you directions.
So now CrossCode is out on console, but it looks like almost no big sites have reviewed it. The PC release didn't get much either. What's up with that? Did they not send out review codes?
A bit of footage of the Nier mobile game. Looks appealing, but they did also confirm it has a gacha model.
