Featuring Breath of Fire 2 and sacral music.
Greetings fellow game music lovers,
I'm still not back at 100%, but after two weeks it seems like a good idea to put the flag back up. And we do it through a look at one of the major RPG series of the 90s: Breath of Fire. The second part released for SNES in 1994 has a lot of music that was inspired by religious music, some of which we already had a look at. I think this sequence is a spooky remix of a certain melodic progression, that has appeared in christian religious hymns of all ages. Some examples:
Christian Gregor - "Weil ich Jesu Schäflein bin" (1784):
Christ, The Lord, is Risen Today (Victimae Paschalis laudes) (1859):
The earliest incarnation of such a progression I know is from "Alle Psallite Cum Luya" a Latin motet from the 13th or 14th century:
Hope to return to regular schedule from now on.
Phil out!
