Featuring Golden Axe 2 and Jazz.
Greetings fellow game music lovers,
the new blog entry, a little later and shorer than usual due to technical issues. Nevertheless, hopefully it is something nifty for you. Golden Axe 2 from 1992, the Genesis/Mega Drive sequel of the 1989 arcade hack n slash veteran. The series spawned entries well into the Sega Saturn age.
In one of the last stages named only "Castle" in the soundtrack, you have an unusually calm sound contrasting the final battle with a very prominent bassline:
For comparison, the song "Interplay" by Bill Evans from the year 1963. Listen to the bassline, also there are variants of varying similarity throughout the song, so I recommend hearing a little further:
Comparable basslines can also be found in earlier jazz artists like
Spencer Williams "Shim Me Sha Wabble" ( 1917 ):
It might be that such structures go back until Baroque but I lack a strong sample ( listen for example Vivaldi RV371 background, there are several like this ):
Next week we dig further!
Phil out.
