Phils Game/Pop Music Similarities #261 - Marble Ragness

   0

Featuring Sonic The Hedgehog and latin music.

Greetings fellow game music lovers,

after we had Mario last week, this time it is Sonic The Hedgehog (1991) with an attempt to clear up the missing songs that weren't in the video yet. Among these songs is the Marble Zone Stage Theme which is the obligatory fire stage of this game:

The general song pattern is based on something that often appears in Bachatas and Rumbas. Example:

Which is probably the reason why some people made a Bachata version of it:

Thanks to VGMLs RackBox (Zeek) for this suggestion.

For the melody a common example that has been listed by several people is the song "Music to Watch Girls By" by Sidney Ramin. This song also has clear latin elements:

There may be other songs especially from the caribbean with these structures although I currently lack good examples.

The pincipal structure might go back to the ragtime era:

Rube Bennet - "Raggedy Rag" (1914):

Now for the later part of the song that starts around 0:30:

For this I can offer a song by Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Ismael Miranda from the 70s:

Ismael Miranda - "La Cama Vacia" (1974):

Next week for something entirely different!

Phil out.
