Featuring Kid Icarus and mostly latin music.
Greetings fellow game music lovers,
I want to use this submission to give some some final thoughts about melodies from Kid Icarus (1986) I haven't addressed yet.
First, we have the Sky World theme:
The song consists of short melodies that end in a four-note burst (cha-cha-cha-cha). Such structures often appear in brazilian music which has been popular in Japan for a long time. Some examples:
Ernesto Nazareth - "Bicyclette-Club" (1899):
Conjunto A Voz do Morro - "Intriga" (1965) (Listen closely for the backing):
Luiz Gonzaga - "O Forró De Mané Vito" (1959 ? ) (again, listen closely to the backing):
It might be possible that something similar also appears in caribbean music which Tanaka is a known fan of.
For the castle theme:
I think it's a stock marching rhythm. Example:
Adolphe Sellenick - "Tatar Retreat" (before 1893):
So what's next? People who follow my Twitter account will have noticed that I developed an interest in caribbean music lately. Since this brought some interesting material I spontaneusly decided to hold caribbean weeks starting next weekend.
