Featuring Street Fighter 2 - The World Warrior and Funk.
Greetings fellow game music lovers,
today we have a a franchise that I haven't visited in a long time: Street Fighter 2, the game that revolutionized fighting games in 1991. If you watched Youtube in the last years, there already several comparisons featuring the Guile and Ken stage theme which have been attributed to several jazz fusion artists. I hope to fill some of the remaining gaps in this regard and you will not be suprised to hear that the general musical direction for these samples is the same.
The first song I want to have a look at is the stage theme from the endboss, Mr. Bison (Vega in Japan). A spooky, jazzy sound that appropriately sets the mood for the final battle:
The structure of this song - a high note and a low note with an occasional trumpet jingle in the background - can often be found in 70s/80s funk music. Some examples (listen to the backings):
The Whispers - "Out The Box" (1979):
Kool & The Gang - Pretty Baby (1982):
Floyd Cramer - "Main Street Electrical Parade" (1978):
Con Funk Shun - "Happy Face" (1980):
Next week is another Street Fighter 2 sample!
Phil out.
