Biomutant: A Post-Apocalyptic Action RPG With A Cute Twist

   0

Biomutant is an action role-playing game developed by Swedish developer Experiment 101 and published by THQ Nordic. The game was released on 25 May 2021 for multiple consoles and PC. The game is set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective in which the player takes control of a mammalian warrior in a world filled with mutated animals. Players first customize their character including length, body shape and thickness, fur, fangs, and many other attributes that can be tweaked and all have direct impact on the statistics of the playable character during gameplay.

Who is the game for?

The game is perfect for all gamers out there. The game gives the players a chance to wield an arsenal of mutant animal superpowers and enhance it with different melee weapons. In addition, the game features fluid dynamic character movement allowing the player to dash and roll through the game and manipulate their body to perform attack and block techniques. Moreover, there are twenty weapons ranging from a switchblade, a razor to a flamethrower and various other things to attack and defend against the monsters. According to GameSpot, "Biomutant is a charming action RPG that introduces the mechanic of 'mutants' — post-apocalyptic fauna that are on the brink of extinction.

What is the story?

Biomutant follows the journey of Faun D'Ulsa, the son of a soldier who was killed in an army operation in the barren desert of the northeastern United States. The four of them get separated when their car breaks down and as the boy walks on through the deserted town, he encounters strange animals that resemble fur-covered apes and monkeys. He later escapes with a strange little girl named Jaanja and discovers a village hidden under the vast emptiness of the wasteland. The boy gains the help of the villagers and takes on his role as the protector of the small village. As he and the villagers live together, strange revelations about the nature of the wasteland surface, and a conflict between a band of humans and mutated beasts arises.

Gameplay

BioMUTANT is a single player game that can be played by the player alone or with up to four others. The game places players in a post-apocalyptic world in which animals have turned into mutated beasts. The player can either fight against the dominant mutated beasts, or settle their disputes amongst themselves. The game gives the players a set amount of customization when deciding what set of stats to assign to the player's character. Each of these stats affect the gameplay differently. The players take direct control over the character, except when they engage in multiplayer battles. The player can create and customize their character during the pre-game creation mode, which takes between 15 minutes to 2 hours to complete.

Graphics

The game’s graphics is a mix of real life animals and stunning post-apocalyptic landscapes. The characters are ruggedly realistic but have a strange, pixellated look that not only adds character but gives it a cool texture. The sprites for the animals and the human soldiers have a strange likeness to a cell phone. They have blocky outlines, while the buildings are geometric with sharp angles. You get a sense of scale and mass when encountering these elements. Players can interact with real-life objects, including houses and other buildings. The environments are packed with detail, with each plant and animal detail being painstakingly handcrafted, in a point-and-click manner, with gamers actively contributing to the game’s world design.

Conclusion

The games mentioned above are excellent examples of how indie games are shaping the gaming industry and encouraging the creative way that developers think. Games like Coma and Cyanide Studio’s Sniper Elite 4 have captured the attention of multiple players worldwide and started to incorporate indie-style elements in their gaming projects. While Ubisoft and other AAA developers are making more of an effort to release games with smaller budgets and lesser qualities, the new trend of indie games is exciting for the industry. With the greater variety of indie games that have been released in the past year alone, players have more opportunities to find games that they personally enjoy.
