Naia's End of the Year Wrap-Up: Filled with Ranty Bias and Flamebait

   0
Since everyone else is doing it, I will give my two cents on how this year was for gaming, the biggest surprises for me, and my top games. I'm not a journalist and am limited by my cash, so I haven't played everything. I also play mostly RPG's so I don't have a best FPS of the year (the only one I played, Metroid Prime 3) or best sports game (if I did it would be Wii Sports again).

My backlog had almost gotten to the point of being caught up until Quarter 4 2007 happened, and now I'm back in the whole. In light of that I will also list my 2007 titles I'm looking forward to playing. They should get some love.

Here is my quick and dirty list:

Biggest Surprise (news related): The Wii is STILL in short supply

Okay, I admit I shouldn't be too surprised. After eating my words with the DS, I kind of expected the Wii to do the same. I did not anticipate the shortage to last this long however and that I can finally talk about my dirty secret little hobby to all my friends and co-workers without feeling like a total nerd. Plus since I'm an educated gamer I can tell them all to buy Zack and Wiki instead of Ninja Bread Man.

Biggest Surprise (a game I did not think I would like): Puzzle Quest

I could almost make Puzzle Quest a GOTY candidate for me. I had such a tumultuous relationship with this title. I played it on the PSP and hated it. However I could not stop playing it despite how much I hated it. After a while it got to the point where I started to like it and finished it. I immediately bought it on XBox Live arcade to play it on a big screen and I did it all over again, with a different job class. This time I was wiser and could see the 4-in-a-row pieces more easily. Usually titles that are the top hitters for me I know about months in advanced an anticipate. This time, I was side-blinded by a true gem, a very addicting gem... everyone and their mom should play it. It's cool yo.

Dumbest Mistakes-

Microsoft- I can't fucking believe you're still having RROD issues. I'm glad I divide my time to my consoles or I would be worried on the state of my 360. Fix it! Fucking fix it! I know a billion dollars is chump change for you guys, but that is still no excuse. I love some of the games on your system but I can't help but feel like you're paying your way into the video game industry.

Sony- I used to love you and your consoles. Make me love you again. Stop releasing more SKUs and fake price drops. You got a lot better at the end of 2007 so keep it up. Don't mess up and give me a reason to buy you in 2008.

Nintendo- Where do I begin? Why bother with a Wii system number if you will still force us to use friend codes? This does not simplify your online infrastructure! Let us use the SD cards to access files DIRECTLY to the Wii! Or add a harddrive! Do something! How am I going to store that many Wii ware games and VC games?! Don't tell me to just delete them. That's a dumbass reason and you know it.

All three of them- cut the PR bullshit. Most of us hate it. I don't know who you think you're impressing.

Best thing I bought this year: a "not" R4. Now I can "not" play DQIV for the DS in beta english. :D

Prettiest Game I saw all year: Eternal Sonata. That cell-shaded style is absolutely beautiful. Ultra-realism does not impress me.

Most Beautiful Score: Bioshock. Garry Scyhman is the shit.

Best controls: Metroid Prime 3 (I don't think I can play FPS's any other way)

Most fun I had all year: Playing Super Mario Galaxy.

Coolest Story (tie): Jeanne D'Arc and Hotel Dusk

Games from 2007 I still haven't played yet, want to, and am looking forward: Eternal Sonata, Rock Band, Zack and Wiki, Bioshock, Portal, things on my not R4

Games I wanna play in 2008: DQ Swords, Brawl, FF Crystal Chronicles RoF

Games I want to know more about: Devil May Cry 4, Sonic RPG

Games I want to see in 2008 (This is fantasy): All the DS DQ games come out in the US, Skies of Arcadia 2, new Mother games, less First Person Shooters.

Overall, a great year for gaming. Regardless of what you like, everyone has something to play. We all win :D

Sorry in advanced if you think I'm on crack for liking the things I like, but thems the brakes.

About naia-the-gamerone of us since 1:51 PM on 09.13.2007

My name is Naia (pronounced either Nay-a or Neye-a, like yay or like eye). I've been poking around here for a while, although I don't comment as much as I used to. I do the music and the sound stuff. Teach and do scholarly research too! I do mostly freelance work and I'm always looking for people (even on DToid) to do fun projects with in entertainment. That can be either in theater, film, TV, or video games. I want to be like Kermit the Frog and be part of a group that entertains and makes people happy. I also love blue slimes, puppies and Sprinkles Cupcakes.

I've been playing computer and video games all my life. My dad was a programmer so we got an IBM 5150 PC very early on in the 80's. For Christmas in 1989 my parents surprised me with a Nintendo and it's been downhill ever since. I have/had most consoles over the years, mainly from Sony or Nintendo. I've had some Sega consoles and an Xbox 360 too.

I'm a big fan of the JRPG trinity of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Fire Emblem (more DQ and FE lately, but I didn't hate FFXV). I was a finalist in Nintendo's DQ6 trivia contest back in 2011. I play RPGs, Action/Adventure, Platformers, Puzzles, and Point-n-Click Adventure games. I will play fighters and shooters, but they have to be the right kind of game.

Also, Rydia is my hero.

I'm such a nerd, I like to keep track of all the games I've completed in an excel file (it's over 400). Now that my backlog is out of control I have a word document for that too. My goal is to for once and for all eliminate the backlog, or at least keep it to a number in the single digits.

I have a lot of things to say about the game industry, it's something I care deeply about and love giving my opinions. I like to rant about shit. I'm here just to share what I have to say, in hopes someone is willing to listen.

Also for the record, my Top 5 Games of All Time
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy 4
3. Super Mario 3
4. Dragon Quest 11
5. Phantasy Star 4

Yes, I love my retro games (and DQ 11)
