Sometimes it only takes a good piece of music to raise your adrenalin in the late hours of the night. I personally enjoy a good spooky song in the late hours of the night, especially if I’m at work. I can’t quite explain why but for one reason or another I find it enjoyable. I especially enjoy the ones that are more so atmospheric rather than musical. To that end Tomb of the Ancients fits the bill rather nicely.
Rayman 2 – Tomb of the Ancients
The level itself isn't very tomb like from what I remember. I mean sure there are some robot remain but this could just as easily be a dumping spot for old units that are outdated. The stage does have a spooky vibe with poison/murky water, wrecked ships, spiders, and skeletal like enemies that work sort of like a wall master from The Legend of Zelda. ultimatly the design of the stage is meh. What really brings this one up is the music.
The piano at times frantic, the echoes in the distance, the intensity of the violins. All of these elements coming together with an organization that makes it less a song and more part of the overall atmosphere of the level. I really enjoy that quality as it not only enhances the environment of the level itself, but also the player’s surroundings. It is hard to explain but there is just something about music like Tomb of the ancients that can really change the way you feel within your current space. It’s almost as if it bleeds into your mind and that then gets passed on to your perception of the room you’re in making you feel uncomfortable or uneasy. This makes it a great track for the game, and for me a great piece of music to listen to in the late hours of the night. In the right space with a fair amount of control the temporary fear induced by songs like this can actually be rather enjoyable (at least to me). Like a decent horror move by the end I find myself leaving a bit happier than before.
