After the explosive popularity of Five Nights at Freddie’s it seemed like every other new horror game was just another jump scare fiesta. No thought or creativity, just throw in some sort of monster in a mental asylum or other creepy setting and bam, you had a “horror” game. So when I saw a game called Jump Scare Mansion in my feed I felt it would another game to add onto an ever growing pile of bad horror games. Very happy to be proven wrong on this one.

Specimen 12/Here Comes Trouble: Spookie’s House of Jump Scares/ Jumps Scare Mansion
Though the game has jump scares and is fairly linear it does have variety as every couple hundred floors will follow a theme and carry with it a unique Specimen that will chase you within its domain (range of floors). Some Floors will require minor puzzle solving skills and a few contain notes and files left behind by a few different parties including scientists and unfortunate bystanders who also came I to the mansion.
In my opinion Specimen 12 and his section may very well be the best part of the game. His section is designed like an actual mansion and you’ll need to find keys in various rooms to progress further, all while being chased by an old man with a scythe. While inside the main area of the mansion he can 1 hit kill you so it’s important to be patient and stealthy. Also keep in mind that even if you evade him he can comeback for you in another space or revisit the same one. His pursuit theme makes the encounter and his sudden arrivals moderately intense which is a plus in my book.
Taking all that into account Specimen 12 ends up being a better scissor man than the scissor walker from Night Cry. A crazy stalker character with an oversized impractical weapon that comes out of nowhere and chases you down as you try to escape a mansion. Sounds a lot like Clock Tower to me. That’s not a bad thing mind you, just something I noticed.
While some other floors are varied this one segment is pretty different from the rest and being so late in the game it was a refreshing surprise. This is on top of the game defying my low expectations. It managed to take a tired concept and have fun with it in a way that is both unsettling and enjoyable.
