The intro to these blogs is seriously the hardest part of them. Everything else is easy-peasy, but this is absolutely the part I struggle with. Which is why these will probably always be me bitching about them. I apologize in advance. Sorry.

Another month has passed and so it is time for me to share another book. And this time I have chosen a book I read in high school. Shocker, I know. I’ve only done this schtick for like half of these. You’ll all be very shocked when I inevitably do it again, I am sure. I should probably heed my own advice and start reading more books as my pool of books I read as a youngster will eventually run dry. But until then…

The Warrior Heir is a young adult novel about Jack, a young man who feels distant from the world around him. This is because he has to take medicine due to a heart condition he has suffered from since birth. But one day, Jack decides to not take his medicine. And he discovers that without it he feels stronger and faster than before. Far less restricted physically.

And then he almost kills a fellow student due to this burst of strength.

After this Jack’s life begins to spiral as he discovers that his heart condition is not what he was told. And he soon becomes entangled in a fantastical story with himself at its center. Why he’s going through this and what part he plays in it all I can not tell you. If you want to know, you’re going to have to read the book. 

I bought The Warrior Heir on a complete whim at a Target. I liked the minimalistic cover and thought that there were worse ways to spend my $15. I ended up liking the book quite a bit (obviously, or else I probably wouldn’t have made it Book of the Month, right?). The book is a bit long, but the font is fairly good sized so it doesn’t feel nearly that long. It’s definitely written for the middle to high school crowd, but I feel that adults can get some enjoyment out of it. It creates a pretty interesting world with some decent characters. It is rife with typical teenage drama, but if you can look past that there is a pretty cool fantasy story underneath.

Also just a little side story, I read the first three books in the series and thought that I had read all of them. Upon looking on the book’s Amazon page however I discovered that I missed two more books. So I guess I’ll have to dive back into the world of Heir Chronicles. Might as well re-read these backs beforehand.

• Before Chima was a novelist, she worked as a clinical dietitian in Cleveland. She worked at both the Cleveland Clinic and The MetroHealth System where she directed the Clinical Nutrition Department and established the Diabetes Self-Management Program.

• Chima decided to quit her assistant professorship to write full-time when her sons became teenagers. The Warrior Heir was her first book.
