A not-so-short while ago, I came up with the idea for a video game: what if there was a tournament fighter where you didn’t have to worry about any of the inputs? Instead of fumbling with controls, anyone would have the ability to focus on the strategy of a fighter. It would be something like Dive Kick that simplifies the genre to seeming absurdity, but shows the depths it truly has. Then I got the idea to make a card game to test it, and then I decided to just make it into a board game. My most recent decision was inspired by my inability to use photoshop tools efficiently - remove the cards completely! So now I am in a position where I need to make sure that the game plays well, and that is where you come in!
I want you all to help me playtest my game, which I would say is in a pre alpha state.
What will you need?
Character sheets, which can be found here.
A way of tracking the battlefield, a 5x2 grid.
Tokens to represent the position of your character.
Tokens to represent first action, second action, combo options, and meter (5 meter tokens)
A way to track life totals
The Rules, which can be found here
For all tokens, I recommend using pocket change - a penny for meter tokens, a nickel for first action, a dime for 2nd action. I think that a cribbage board is great for tracking life totals.
What I want you to test, in order of importance
If you would like to, please send me game data: which 2 fighters were played against each other, who won, and by what margin. Also, I would love any feedback you can give on any aspect of the game. I would like to say that having coins as tokens and spreadsheets for character sheets is temporary - once the concept is proven, I will work on more concrete designs.
My goal for this testing focuses on 1 through 3 at this stage. Assuming that no one fighter or strategy stands out as being completely broken, my goal is to balance the four existing characters so the games come down to player skill more than a game meta. From there, single characters can be introduced into the pool until there is a roster of 8-12 available.
If at any point you have questions, feel free to send me a DM.
