Shit gets real this month.
For this month I’m spotlighting a graphic novel about a pretty serious topic: Depression. Yes, I really think this is a good idea. If you have depression (I do) then it can feel at times like you are you are all alone. Like no one understands how you feel. Like you are the only one who is going through the issues that you are going through. I know I’ve felt like that. And sometimes all you really want is to know that you’re not the only one.
And this is where this book comes in.
My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness by Nagata Kabi
143 pages
Genre(s): Manga, Biographical, Non-Fiction
My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness is available physically and digitally on Amazon. Since it's a graphic novel there is no audio version. Sorry.
My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness is a diary-esque story of author and artist Nagata Kabi’s experience with her depression. Originally started as a webcomic, it became popular enough that Kabi was able to get the comic into print. The story details many things surrounding her depression from how she discovered it, the symptoms of it, and how she eventually started working through it. It also discusses her realization that she’s a lesbian and her first girl-girl sexual encounter (which is also her first sexual encounter period).
Now the reason I’m spotlighting this book is because parts of it resonated with me. Not the lesbian parts, as I am a mostly straight male, but the depression parts definitely hit home for me. In the book Kabi discusses how a lot of her depression stems from a lack of love for herself. I too, have this issue. I’m often overly critical of myself and it makes making progress in anything very hard. Doing things often felt pointless because I never expected to succeed. The first Book Club is a good example of this shortcoming of mine.
There are some other parts of her depression that reflects my own, but I’d like to save some for people to discover from the book on their own. If you are someone who has depression, or know someone who does, or you’d just like to learn more about it, then I highly recommend this book. It’s a great firsthand account by someone who has experienced it. I have to admit that it will probably have more of an impact if you suffer from a similar type of depression as Kabi like I do. I actually cried while reading the book. It was reassuring in a bizarre way that I wasn’t alone in how I felt. And it’s helped me a lot since I’ve read it. I am eagerly awaiting Kabi’s follow up book My Solo Exchange Diary.
I hope you will consider checking out My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness (but only if you are old enough to, I mean it). See you next month with another book. Happy reading!
Author Trivia:
Nothing. She’s very reclusive. That’s all I got. No quote either. Here's some sample pages/panels instead.
Just a side-note, there is humor in this book. It's not all this somber. I just wanted to include some of the parts that I identified with.
