The Blonde Bass' Very Own Game Awards? It's more likely than you think.

Hey, small fry. 2016 just ended, and you're probably wondering about my opinions concerning the state of its video games.

What's that? You weren't? And everyone and their grand mother is making their own list anyway? Hmm... Well, what if I told you I put together a nice video with nice footage and even some surprise reveals? Does that tickle your fancy a little more?

Good, good. Then before we start the video, I'll just go over the categories quickly. Perfect time for you to write your predictions, or the games you would pick for these categories, down in the comments!

  • Best Action Game
  • Best RPG
  • Best Indie
  • Best Writing
  • Worst Writing
  • Best Visuals
  • Best Soundtrack
  • Worst Monetization
  • Why? (For video-game related things that confuse me)
  • Best Game of 2016

As you can see, there are both negative and positive awards. Well, a lot more positive than negative, but still some negative. I think that distribution reflects pretty well how I feel about video games in general. 2016 was a pretty fantastic year both in quantity and quality, with games that I would never have expected to actually come out like Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian finally going gold. When I was working on the opening scene of the awards above, I was surprised by how easy it was to pick 28 significant video game characters of 2016. Both for western and eastern games, the year was packed.

Buuut, it wasn't all perfect. While I didn't buy into the No Man's Sky hype, it was disheartening to see so many people disappointed with the title. Mighty No 9 being so mediocre in the end was a disappointment, and I wasn't impressed by some other titles either. But all in all, 2016 has been a fantastic year with so many good games, that I still haven't given a chance to games like Odin Sphere and Titanfall 2. There are only so many hours in a day.

Where is the future headed for the medium? Well, it's hard for me to see beyond 2017. But I do hope mobile gaming in particular gets better. Microtransactions and online requirements make mobile games more of a hassle than a source of enjoyment to me, even if a couple of games managed to defy that trend in the past. The consumer base is most likely to blame, judging by how little attention paid games get compared to free titles. So, if I had a 2017 wish, it would be that people prove the design teams responsible for these free to play games wrong.

Otherwise, I'm already pretty happy with the games announced for the year so far, so I wouldn't dare ask for more.
