Art of the Week: !!! (Chk Chk Chk). Somewhere there is a Spanish cover band ¡¡¡

!!! (pronounced with any monosyllabic sound repeated three times), is a Sacramento California band formed in 1996 as a merger of several existing bands, most notably being the hardcore punk band "The Yah Mos" of which !!! principle song writer and vocalist Nic Offer was the lead. Like Sacramento itself, the sound of !!! pulls from many different genres. While Yah Mos was more oriented towards punk, !!! is a bit more danceable. !!! features accents of new wave, indie pop, electronic dance, funk, and remains of punk.

The name !!! came from the South African comedy "The Gods Must Be Laughing." At one point during the film Bushmen are speaking in the Khoisan language, a language that features clicks for consonantes. During this time the subtitle for the sound was displayed with explamation points such as "!."

When The Yah Mos ended in the mid 90s, most of the band decided they wanted to go in a more danceable direction compared to the punk stylings of the previous band. They became an 8 person band with multiple percussionists, brass instruments, keyboards, and more.

In 1998 !!! released the single "The Dis-Ease & The Funky Branca" as their first release under their new name. I suppose technically it's two singles, not quite enough to be considered an EP. The two tracks feature WILDLY different styles of music. The Dis-Ease is close to the hardcore punk style of The Yah Mos, while The Funky Branca, fitting it's name, is a bit more jazzy and dance oriented, though still a harsh sounding track at parts.

In 2000/2001 the band released it's first LP, the self titled album "!!!" features 7 tracks. You definitely want to listen to this album with your subwoofer turned up to get the full experience.

In 2003 the band released a 9minute single, "Me and Giuliani Down By The Schoolyard (A True Story)." As the title might hint, it is a reference to New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.

The followup full length album, "Louden Up Now", would continue with the politically charged themes. Coming only a few years after 9/11 and a year after the start of the 2003 Iraq War, the album has pretty distinct anti-war lyrics.

2004 wasn't the greatest year for the band, while they did release an EP that year, sadly, Mikel Gius, the original drummer for the band, died in a car accident while riding his bike.

In 2007 the band released their next full length album, Myth Takes. The track "All My Heroes Are Weirdos" is in Tony Hawk's Proving ground, and a mix of "Yadnus" is featured in GTAIV.

Must be the moon is definitely one of my favorite tracks they've done.

2010 the band released "Strange Weather Isn't It?" Shortly after the albums release the band's original bassist, Tyler Pope, left the group.

The band would tour but otherwise remain fairly quiet until 2013 with the release of the LP, "Thr!!!ler", considered one of their strongest releases.

In October of 2015 the band released their most recent work, "As If", which feels like their most experimental album.

The band sometimes performs covers of Stereolab songs under the band name Stereolad.

There may be no fucking rules, but they fucking rule.
