Review: Mega Man X Collection (Mega Man X 1-3) Part 1

Ah, sidescrollers. My guilty pleasure. These things are the one thing that has—and always will—have my interest.

Seriously. It’s starting to become a problem. I sometimes imagine life as a 2D experience in which any hole that you can’t see into is an instant death pit…


All joking aside, one series I was aching to try was the Mega Man X series. When I saw that most of them were on a console I didn’t have, I was disappointed. But then, after I got my PS2, I discovered the Mega Man X Collection. Bought it on sight.

How this review’s gonna go:

First I’ll grade the games alone, then I’ll grade the collection. As the games themselves are where it’s at in a collection, and the disk itself is meant primarily for presentation, I’ll grade the collection afterward.

Now, shall we get started?

Now, keep in mind, when I first got this, I was excited. So, like an idiot, I didn’t play them in order. When I realized how wrong that was, I took a Men in Black flash device and erased my memory.(In all seriousness, I simply deleted my progress and started over from X.)  I had to start over from that dang Central Highway stage.

Mega Man X


Ah, the start of something beautiful. This game, in itself, set the stage for many a butt-kicking in the next fifty years.

Beginning in year 20XX, this game starts off with our hero, Mega Man X, the last creation of Dr. Thomas Light, the creator of the original Mega Man fighting robot. X, an android with the ability to think and make his own decisions, is awakened after 100 years by the scientist and archeologist Dr. Cain. Cain, realizing X’s potential, used X’s blueprints (and his help, mind you) to make a race of robots known as the Reploids (“replicant android”).

Sadly, creations of humans don’t come without prices, and it is later discovered that some of these Reploids have a glitch that makes them turn “Maverick”, meaning that they break the Law of Robotics (NEVER hurt a human). This causes the all the nations of the world to come together and think of a plan, and the thus the notorious Maverick Hunter army was formed.

Fast forwarding, the strongest Maverick Hunter, Sigma, went maverick himself, causing boatloads of panic. This was due to the fact that the Maverick kind now actually had a coordinated leader! Unable to decide whether he should fight or not, X wearily joins the Maverick Hunters in their investigation. He soon meets Zero, the last creation of another scientist, Dr. Albert Wily, Light’s rival who tried to take over the world over 100 years ago. And thus, the battle began.

Well, that’s one heck of a story for a game from the 90’s! But now, to actually gameplay.

The Opening Stage

The game starts on the Central Highway, which, as the name suggest, is a highway. It starts with cars going in the opposite direction—which can’t hit you, btw (which, since the game just started, is a good thing) The level is chaotic, but still easy to pick up. After a few tries, and falling into pits (damn those copter-headed floor destroyers) I made it to the boss. I fought it, got my butt handed to me until I was like “Oh God I’m gonna die!”.



Enter Zero, the guy with the best soundtrack and coolest design. Period.

So, Zero fends the guy (Vile) off and saves X, making Vile’s mech lose an arm in the process. Vile flees, X curses (that existed on SNES?) and Zero pep talks him, telling him that he will soon be powerful like him. Then the level ends and the actual game starts.

The level design of this game is amazing. Aside from having some serious jumping tests, there are enemies and mini-bosses that will also test your evasion and shooting skills. There were several times in the game in which I deliberately went back to a stage just to play the level again (which is a lie, I just went there to fill up my sub-tanks).

The bosses are also amazing. The eight bosses in the eight first levels have a lot of thought put into them, and none of them have the same moves. The fact that they’re so unique is what makes this game so easy to pick up. The weapons that you acquire from them also work well with the game, with deliberate flaws that tell you “hey man, this gun ain’t gonna work on everything”. In the end, the final boss finished the job, putting the cherry on top for a great game.


Using weapons on bosses can either make it easier or more fun depending on your taste.

Despite this, it’s foolish to say the game is the best one out of the series. It’s the first freaking game. If we proceed to just claim this as the best, we’re not giving any of the other games—which, in many series’s cases, can be even better—enough credit they deserve. Nobodies likes Geewunners, since they ruin everything.


Overall: A-

Mega Man X2

Picking up directly from X, X2 follows Megaman X, again, but this time here to finish off what’s left of the mavericks, who are now without a leader. After Zero’s apparent destruction in the first game, X hopes that the fighting can end. Little did he know that there were new mavericks taking Sigma’s place, hoping to resurrect their old leader.

Now, in this game, we’re currently trying to stop the X Hunters—three high-class mavericks who want X dead for killing their leader. To make X more likely to fight them, they present them with a challenge: defeat them, and be given the parts to Zero. X, of course, has no choice but to accept this.

This game, out of all of them, is one of my favorites. The detailing of the levels is even better here than in the last game. You can definitely tell they were pushing the limits of the SNES—some parts of the game look almost as though they would blow up the system (which looks even better NOW since it’s on a later console).

The boss battles here are even better than before. New to the series, a feature that stayed, is the desperation attack. As the name suggest, after the boss’s vitality is half-way through depletion, they get worse moves. This is especially true with Morph Moth and Flame Stag, who partially transform for a final attack (though with Flame Stag, he just changes the color of the fire on his antlers, which changes his speed and power).

One of the flaws of the game, however, is that the minibosses aren’t as cool as the ones in X. On the flipside, they made up for this by making the X Hunters as secret bosses and fortress bosses. The game even punishes you for not fighting them—if you make it to the final stage without defeating all three of them, Zero will be reborn, but without any hugs and reunions. Darn.


The first use of an Ultimate Attack: the Giga Crush

Zero, again, has the best theme.


Overall, this game is a favorite of mine, and, despite not having the minibosses I hoped for, it still has the appeal simply for trying not to be completely like the first game.

Overall: A+?( dangit, I can’t decide…)

Mega Man X3

Taking place a few years after X2, the world is believed to be at piece, thanks to a Reploid named Dr. Doppler, a scientist who, allegedly, has made a cure for the Maverick virus. Along with curing these mavericks, Doppler has constructed a city known simply as “Doppler Town”, a place of refuge for those looking to escape the chaos of the mavericks yet to be treated with the antivirus.


Turns out, the punk lied. Now, Doppler Town is a city in peril, as the mavericks that were thought to be treated are serving Doppler, and the innocent are put in danger as the city becomes a fortress. Doppler’s servants, the Nightmare Police, are sent out to bring X to him, dead or alive.


How did they even fall for this guy?

This game (which, btw, is the PSX version and not the SNES version) was very different from the other two. First, the music sounds like that of a nineties action show, which I like. In addition, ZERO IS PLAYABLE.

This game, overall, applied the same rule as X2: it chose to differ from the others. Long gone are ride armors (those mech suits that Vile likes to ride) just sitting there; now, we have these sweet ports on the ground on every level to use one of four! They made sure that the armors were unique in their own way; however, their use is very limited. That stinks. What if I want to fight a boss with one? Nope, the armors are only meant to help you find upgrades.


In addition, the multiple ending possibilities are even more noticeable. Now, if you lose as Zero (which is unlikely; he has the most health and can only be played on some levels), not only will he not be playable anymore, but the ending will be different. In addition, what exactly you kill will determine what you fight later on. The most notable change, however, is the armor system. Now, not only can you find the four armor parts, but you can also find “chips”; special enhancements that can change how each armor part works. You can only hold one, and once you get it, you’re stuck with it. While you may think that stinks, I kinda like the feature, as it makes you have to work with what you’ve got.


The bosses here are different as well. Now, instead of focusing merely on dynamic, the bosses here just like to be evil. Yup, they have downright devastating moves that they can combo into, which can really mess you up if you're not ready or are trying not to use weapons. To make things worse, the desperation attack makes it even worse.


Gravity vs. Wasp: who wins?

Plot wise, this story is darker, as well. Remember Vile? He’s back for more, and this time, Zero can’t save you from his mech. You have to kill his mech, then kill him, and ironically, he’s more powerful without it. Bummer.



In addition to that, we get to see just how diabolical Sigma can be in this game. Now, rather than just, well, being there, he’s resorted hypnotizing Reploids to make them seemingly fine, all the while making them do his bidding in the process. Dr. Doppler was an okay Reploid scientist with dreams, but Sigma worked sorcery hypnotized him to work for him, building him a new body in the process.

In the end, with longer levels and more dynamic bosses, X3 is, in a lot of ways, a good game. My only complaint here is that the animation associated with the PSX version stinks, at least graphics wise. Also, Bilzzard Buffalo!

Overall, a solid effort. Though the PSX version’s animation in the cutscenes is rather dubious.

Overall: B+ ( The SNES version is genetically superior)

As there is a lot to write about for these games (especially the next three) I intend to continue at a later date. For now, I’d just like to say that I’m completely satisfied with these games. The fact that so much effort was put into them is what makes them a marvel. Until next time, Hunters!
