After several years of reading (and loving) games journalism I still cannot fathom how entire development bonus payments can be decided on the whimsical nature of a metascore average. Thus, to illustrate this foolishness, and ponder yet again on the purpose of numbers versus letters, let us now take part in a bold experiment. I propose that we take our game collections for a particular system and average the averages in the comments below! Let's see how far up the numbers your tastes go: are you an "average Joe" who will consume a variety in your gaming diet? Or are you a Michelin-starred gamer, playing nothing less than a 90 average?
Here's a reminder of what to do:
1) Assemble a set of game titles. I think this will work best if they are grouped by system.
2) Check their metascores!
3) Find the mean. (Add all scores together then divide by the number of games/scores you've taken into account).
My PlayStation 3 metascore: 81.8 recurring, based on 18 titles.
This is based on seven years of Xbox 360 ownership versus some two years of PlayStation 3 ownership, so I've bought a mix of high profile exclusives that do not entirely represent my broader gaming tastes. Therefore Guitar Hero III is not represented (I regret nothing) but nor is Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (I borrowed it off a friend, I swear!) These are games bought and paid for, exclusive of PlayStation Plus downloads. See below.
Bioshock Infinite 94
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 94
Call of Duty: Black Ops II 83
Dead Space 88
Dragon Age: Origins 87
Far Cry 4 85 (only PS4 score available)
Gran Turismo 5 84
Gran Turismo 6 81
Heavy Rain 87
ICO/Shadow of the Colossus HD 92
LEGO Lord of the Rings 82
Little Big Planet 2 ? (no score/not found)
Mass Effect 2 94
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 94
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes 66
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain 93 (PS4 score)
Spelunky 83
Tomb Raider 87
If this gets off the ground I'll post my Wii and Xbox 360 scores, too. Then fantasize about the time I will finally afford a PlayStation 4 and daydream about what I'd buy for that, too. Starting with The Order: 1886, obviouslloololololly.
