First recaps of the year, and I don't really have much to say. Other than experiencing the awesomeness that is Undertale, unfortunately, things haven't been going too great lately (if you couldn't tell from my bad quickposts... sorry about that folks T^T) so a lot of my time is spent either stressing out, or failing at life. The usual, I suppose.
BUT — yes, there's a but! — I AM going to try a little harder to get out of this rut. While there's obviously no guarantees I'll succeed — hell, I'm not even convinced I can — at least I'll try so no one can say I didn't. Honestly, the reason why I'm suddenly so... "eager" to try now is that, well, I'm in a pretty bad spot in my life, so I'm worried how much longer I have left to live. But that's another story for another day.
Unless I die before then. Then, I don't know, hit me up in the afterlife or something. DON'T VISIT A MEDIUM, THEY LIE TO YOU!
So, Undertale. I know I shouldn't hype it up after reading Jonathon Holme's piece on it (he mentions that it's BECAUSE people assume it's "just another indie RPG" that they get blown away) but I can honestly say two things: one) I NEVER would've played it if people didn't say it was the greatest thing in the world since In-N-Out Burger, and two) I personally think it's one of the best games I've played. Unfortunately, I can't say why because I don't want to spoil it (believe me, Undertale is a game best gone in as blind as someone who won a staring contest with the sun), but to me, it's an experience that could almost literally not have been done in any other medium.
It HAD to be a videogame, which is why it's one of my top favorite videogames of all time. The twists, the turns... it basically took everything I knew about RPGs and surprised the heck out of me. Plus, it also had one of the best combat systems in a turn-based RPG EVER. Again, I don't want to ruin why Undertale is such a big success, so I guess I won't say more about it.
Although, I've been meaning to write a blog about Undertale's music because I do have some stuff I want to say about it. It's also one of the few videogame OSTs I've bought, and I've been listening to select tracks on repeat for a while. In one sitting, I must've listened to my favorite battle theme at least 50 times. Can YOU guess what it is?
Well, I don't want to leave this spot empty, so I guess I should talk a bit about this new anime I picked up. I mentioned in a quickpost that I bought something called selector infected WIXOSS. It was recommended to fans of those who liked Puella Magi Madoka Magika because it's similar in tone and premise: while PMMM was deconstructing the "Magicial Girl trope" with colorful visuals contrasted by a dark story, WIXOSS is supposed to deconstruct the "card game anime" genre with a dreary story as well.
While I only had time to check out about four episodes, I have to say I'm pretty hooked on it so far. The visuals are pretty amazing whether it's a fantasy setting or a modern city, and the English dub is pretty good. The characters so far aren't amazing yet, except for this one bitch who's totally a bitch. I don't want to spoil who it is in case you check it out, but she's kinda grating when you first meet her. Funny enough, I like her BETTER when she's acting like a bitch.
I hope the story gets pretty dark soon though. It's not that I need ALL my shows to be grim and bleak (related question: does anyone recommend the 1960s Batman TV shows? I feel like I want to watch something very light-hearted and funny with lots of bad practical effects) but it IS one of the reasons why I chose this particular series over other titles I was curious about.
Anyway, that's it for now! I gotta finished up Comments of the Week. Today's the big 50 if all goes well!
