Discussing: Falling Behind The Next Generation

Last week, it was announced that Mortal Kombat X for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 was cancelled. After months of delays, last gen owners won’t be able to play the latest Mortal Kombat game. I was disappointed by this news as I’ve really wanted to play this game but don’t own a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or a strong enough PC. However, what was worse is this cancellation confirmed something to me I knew may be happening but wasn’t sure it definitely was: I’m officially falling behind.

There are some who say there’s nothing on the new consoles that warrant the purchase of one since a lot of the big games were coming to last gen as well but I think we can officially cease that argument because that’s no longer the case. Mortal Kombat X was one of the last big games supposed to come to last gen consoles and now it looks like Metal Gear Solid V is, which comes out today. So now we are officially in the eight generation of video games with no overlap with the seventh.

This means that I officially cannot play the newest games aside from indie titles that can run on my PC. I am officially missing out on a lot of new experiences. There are already plenty of games that I’ve missed out on that have crept up on me without me realizing that they were adding up. Bloodborne, The Witcher: Wild Hunt, Sunset Overdrive, and the list is only going to grow this fall. As someone who is trying to break into the video game journalism field, this isn’t a great position to be in.

It’s not just that I can’t be a part of the conversation. I can’t be part of the latest design changes and possibilities in gaming. New innovations in gameplay are being lost to me. The new experiences possible are not for me. As an obvious fan of video games and the medium in general, this is really a loss for me. This is also the longest I’ve gone without being part of the new generation too. Normally, it’s a year to a year and a half. Also, the Wii U (which I do have) doesn’t count. This generation is just starting and the Wii U is ending.

However, I know I’m not the only one in this position. Regardless of our love of video games, there are many gamers who just don’t have the funds to spend $400 all willy nilly. So I would like to know when you were in this predicament and what you did about it. Let me know in the comments and check out my Wordpress blog for more posts. Peace and Love, gamers and players!
