Without a doubt, Avengers: Age of Ultron has been one of the biggest films of 2015 so far, along with such films as Mad Max: Fury Road, Pitch Perfect 2 and that absolute disaster of movie they called Fifty Shades of Grey. But the film to beat this year, so far, has been Furious 7. Not because of the reviews (Mad Max has already dealt with that), but because of the box office. Furious 7 stands at the top of the highest-grossing films of 2015 list with $1.5 billion. But Avengers: Age of Ultron has been often been right at its tail with an impressive $1.28 billion (these are all as of May 29, 2015). But we all knew that Avengers: AOE's prequel, The Avengers (2012) was a tough score to beat, amassing a total of $1.52 billion. But with Furious 7 closing in on The Avengers, is there a chance that Avengers 2 could beat Furious 7?
I don't know, but it looks very much possible, seeing as though Avengers 2 has now obliterated Furious 7 in the US domestic box office and will likely go much further over the next 2-3 weeks. Avengers 2 has been consistently in the top 5 daily box office movies for the whole month, only dropping to 5th on 2 occassions, and it doesn't look like it will change much until Jurassic World comes out which will be a box office success. Avengers 2 is still to be released in Japan, but not until July.
But what has and could prevent Avengers 2 from catching up to Furious 7. First of all, remember that fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao? That fight costed Avengers, big time, but it passed the billion dollar mark in flying colours. Mad Max: Fury Road is another problem, because this film was just awesome, and more and more people will see it, which means less will see Avengers. However, I can't see that being the biggest problem. Jurassic World could be another problem, but it is not out in cinemas yet. So, in reality, it was really the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight that costed Avengers.
Another question is whether Avengers: Age of Ultron can stay in the top 5 box office films of 2015 by the end of this year? With films like Jurassic World, Ant-Man, Terminator: Genisys, The Fantastic Four and, what will be the blockbuster box office movie of the year, Star Wars: the Force Awakens. I reckon it will...just. Ant-Man, Genisys and The Fantastic Four probably won't beat it, but I stress on The Fantastic Four because it looks awesome and it has been eight years since the last Fantastic Four movie came out. Jurassic World has already been given a run for it's money by Avengers and Furious 7, but since there has been no Jurassic Park movie since 2001, there has been a lot of anticipation for this movie, and has a good chance of surpassing Avengers and Furious 7. Then there's Star Wars, which we know will crack $1 billion in a couple of weeks, and should surpass the first Avengers movie without a problem (and could even challenge Titanic for that matter, but not Avatar...yet). This film reunites the three main stars of the best trilogy (prequels weren't good at all) and will set up a box office marvel that will send films like Avengers, Ant-Man, Furious 7, etc. way out of the park
I am leaning towards a yes when it comes to the question of whether Avengers: Age of Ultron will surpass Furious 7 in worldwide box office total, because Furious 7 has only had the occasional blaze in box office results on the weekends. Avengers: Age of Ultron is slowing down for sure, but it remains to be seen how many more people will see Avengers, and whether the Japanese release of Avengers 2 will contribute to the box office success of the film.
