Work is a grind. Get it? Grind. Like skating…?
For those keeping up, work is still kicking my butt right now. The “nine hours on a weekday, five hours on Saturday” wouldn’t be quite as exhausting if you didn’t factor in a 2 to 2 ½ hour(!) bus ride each way. I’ve been trying to keep myself busy on those trips by bringing my Vita along but even with a game and earbuds, you can’t escape the sad fact that some people leave the house smelling like actual human feces and you have to deal with that.
I had to take a break from my obsessive Binding Of Issac Platinum Trophy hunt as re-running all the characters on Hard mode is becoming mind-numbing and I think one of the items is glitched. Luckily, I got a big, chunky Vita hard drive so I’m loaded for bear. I kept hearing good things about OlliOlli 2 but the first couple of stages didn’t wow me. However, I tried again and once the Manuals got unlocked, everything made sense. Bust as many moves as possible while maintaining your combo. Okay, understood.
I’m not normally a very animated gamer. I can curse up a storm in competitive multiplayer but I don’t spaz out. Normally. However, getting into OlliOlli 2 has really brought out the doofus in me. I have a death grip on the Vita which I jerk around in whatever direction I’m trying to use push the joystick to do a trick. I lean in and knock my knees against the seat ahead of me. I grunt or sigh audibly depending on how well I do. In public. Without thinking about it. And suddenly the Wet Feces Man and I aren’t so different after all.
It’s an ingenious little time waster. Better by far than whatever Match 3 or Infinite Runner is popular on phones right now. The instant re-start button is particularly devilish. If any doesn’t go your way, you didn’t land that Perfect Grind or Manual Revert, screw it… just hit triangle. Get a Sloppy rating mid-combo? Triangle. Get distracted and screw up your opening jump? Triangle. By getting an instant do-over in two button presses means the feedback loop never really ends and you can just keep playing until your wrist gets sore. Or whatever.
Oh, and if you’ve been in the forums or the C-Blogs in the last 48 hours, it’s clearly been a little tense around here. I wish we could all just get together and listen to Fred “Sonic” Smith of MC5 lay down some shit hot guitar riffs. Because every disagreement can be solved with a little turbo rock & roll. Particularly at a volume that drowns out any arguing. Stay gold, Destructoid.
So, anyway… games!
The Defenestrator
Welcome to the Playstation side of Friday Night Fights! Every Friday, members of the community get together online to play games and all you need to join is a user account. Down below, you'll find a list of games that we'll play tonight along with the times they'll start, the people that you should hit up for invites, and any other information that you may need.
If you want to play, leave a comment with the games from the schedule you want to play and your PSN name. You should also send a PSN friend request to the host and mention your username here in the message so they know you're one of the cool people and not just some random friend request.
If your favorite game isn't on the schedule, host it yourself! You just need to give us the game, start time, and your PSN name so people know what, when and who. It's also wise to list DLC requirements, game or server names, and anything else people might need to join just so you don't need to message it to everyone individually. Last minute additions in the comments here are fine, but games can also be added earlier in the week by visiting the forums and finding the thread with the coming Friday's date. Adding a game there ensures it's on the blog from the moment it goes up.
