LONG BLOG

The Shit Box: A Shitty State of Affairs

   0

Greetings all, it's been a while since I've done one of these. I've been meaning to let things settle with the redesign process, and wasn't intending to make an entry for another week. This isn't an angry summary like usual, I'm just here to talk about recent events on this site, and the future of this little labor of hate I started. So before I get into things, I just want to say, there are two blogs on the way, eventually. One for Samurai Cop in the main Monday entries, and Eragon to go into a side entry. I don't know when I'll get those out, but they'll be put up at some point in the near future.

With that out of the way, it's time for the main topic. GlowBear and Stevil being fired, something all of you should know, because it happened today. I don't consider myself close with either of them, but they were two of my favorite writers, and it was always a joy doing Friday Night Frights with GlowBear when my day/night schedule permitted. Two lovely, talented people, and it's a shame to see them go. This firing has led OpiumHerz, and probably a lot more community members to pack their bags and leave. While I'm not going to join them in shunning the main website in favor of the forums, I am sad to say that it's prompted me to stop writing extensive blogs like The Shit Box.

I started blogging here for two reasons. The first was to improve myself, learn to express my emotions better, and just generally improve my English comprehension. Which I feel has been going smoothly, even if I need to get better at inserting images into my blogs. The second reason, and the primary motivation that kept this a weekly series, was the chance of getting a front page spotlight, or even getting put on staff, as had happened with Stevil and GlowBear, even if I only had a 0.1% chance of that happening. I want a career in writing, particularly involving games, and Destructoid seemed like an amazing starting point. Community articles making front page, a previous community member becoming editor in chief, and all you badasses who comment? Fuck yes, bitch. But these two firings have altered my perception. Not by much, I still love the community, but it's got me thinking about the recent state of the front page, and the falling amount of interaction I get on these blogs.

I put a lot of time into these blogs, 90-140 minutes for each movie generally, an hour into the rough draft, and then spending a handful of days reading and rewriting whole paragraphs until I'm satisfied with the product that goes up. Generally, I'd say about 5 or 6 hours has gone into each entry, save for From Justin to Kelly, and Zombie Nation. I don't want to stop writing, I was fully prepared to do entries for all 70 suggestions I've received, and even more than that, no matter how much time it took. But with how things are going on the site, and how few people I get to interact with on each entry anymore, I'm just not comfortable continuing with all this work for little payoff, for a site I'm growing increasingly unsatisfied with. I don't claim to be a big player here, I don't think me no longer making c.blogs will leave any kind of impact, but this is how I feel, and I don't see myself wanting to continue writing here with the way things are any time soon.

Also cocks.

About Chistone of us since 3:28 PM on 10.26.2011

I'm your sexy local eyepatch wearing messiah. I watch garbage movies for internet points, and sometimes appear in community podcasts where bad movies/shows are watched.

I sometimes remember I have a Twitter and post horribly stupid shit in it.
