This past weekend (Oct 10th through the 13th) I went to New York Comic Con and enjoyed the full experience for the FIRST time ever; that is if you don't count my half-day Saturday only from last year. New York Comic Con was even better this year, from all the new games being displayed, the tournaments constantly being held, the fact that my childhood friend Marc (soon to be TLMB guest) was there and taught me about the shows and panels...oh and the fact that I was there for 4-days on a Press Pass for free!
For those not caring for the personal experience be sure to read the next blog ALL about gaming (from the PS4 to Xbox One, to the upcoming holiday games and how I feel about them).
[Part 2/Day 3-4] (non-clickable for now)
To start things off in typical me-fashion, I got there pretty late on Thursday. In fact I think it was about 5 or 6 o'clock when I arrived at the Javits Center. There I met up with Marc where we demoed a few games and he broke down the layout of NYCC this year for me. With the limited time I was there on Thursday I played mainly Nintendo games ranging from Wii U games like Super Mario 3D World and Mario and Sonic at the 2014: Winter Olympic Games to the upcoming 3DS titles like: Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds and Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate and Pokemon Y (no wait I already had it!).
From there the Show Floor closed and Marc informed me there was a comedy show hosted by Comedy Mutants being played in the main stage. I, to tell you the truth, didn't expect much nor anything from the comedy show, but it may have been one of the best shows I was ever at. Comedy Mutants is hosted/ran by Brian Posehn with other comedians who each get a 20 minute segment. The lineup for NYCC 2013 on Thursday was: Mike Drucker (a writer for Late Night on Jimmy Fallon), Myq Kaplan, Baron Vaughn, Janeane Garofalo, and of course Poshen himself.
Mike was pretty funny, while Myq was alright (though his last joke was fantastic). Baron Vaughn was the ABSOLUTE funniest guy of the night; I had to go to the bathroom but didn't want, rather could not, because of how hard I was laughing with this man's standup. He did everything right from being a man and choosing cereal in society to even talking about 90's Disney Cartoon Theme Songs igniting a crowd singing DuckTales with him!
Unfortunately, following Baron was the most unfunny and actually painful to watch/listen to Janeane Garofalo. She couldn't keep track of what she wanted to do, she would start something and never finish it, but altogether it was not funny at all and made me sleepy. Following a dreadful 20 minutes, we had Posehn come up to stage to talk about "how stupid and fat he is" and he did just that, but a very humorous twist. He had the biggest nerd-appeal, from what I could tell being in the crowd, and he delivered. The now writer for Deadpool comics (one of them) was spot on hitting jokes about The Avengers to him being a 70's Star Wars guy and many other things. I highly recommend trying to see these guys or trying to find a video or podcast of the show.
Friday was more or less the same for me. I kind of woke up late due to playing Pokemon Y all night, so I got to NYCC at around 2pm-3pm. During the day I found my way looking around for things, like grabbing Luffy posters, to getting Bleach pins, and of course demoing more games. My list games on Friday included Dragonball Z: Battle of Z, Shantae and the Pirates Curse, Strider (2014), Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze, and of course more Super Mario 3D World. There are so many things I wanted to buy but alas I am just a poor person and also a frugal human being so I couldn't really bring myself to buy anything...BUT THESE AWESOME DRAGONBALL Z OFFICIAL SCOUTERS! I got three, as per the set instead of individual buys, so I got the green, red, and blue visor ones! They are amazing, honestly, I can't describe how cool and awesome they look and feel.
Other than that I chilled a bit in the Press Lounge Friday, trying to connect to WiFi which was impossible. I also went to the Adult Swim-Robot Chicken panel, where I saw a preview for the Christmas Special and new season. As well as Seth Green and Mike announcing a new show called Uber Mansion; which looks very funny. Friday, I was a bit tired to be honest, so once the show floor ended, we tried to get into a Cosplay contest to see people's costumes but it was already packed by days end. There Marc and I went to the Neon Genesis Evangelion showing the NGE 3.3 movie, but we left after there was a delay and the fact we haven't watched any NGE ever. So, that night we took the long way home going to the Nintendo World Store Pokemon X/Y Midnight Event Party.
Wow was that place packed...honestly blocks were filled, the cops were even working it! There was a DJ, demo booth stations, statues of the legendaries/covers, and of course costumes. It was in all honestly, just a mass of people, even little kids and their parents waiting for the release or just trying to be a part of the party. But I think everyone was there for the 2DS (kidding).
Well this was pretty long...get ready for the best part in Part 2 aka Saturday and Sunday!
