Always check your targets: Inability to Google vs Ocean Market(t)ing

   0
While it was good to see collective nerdrage doing some good today (and reddit actually proving itself useful, for once), in regards to the whole Ocean Market(t)ing/Stratagy vs customers affair, there seemed to be confusion as to who or what should be under attack.

Torpedoing the Avenger's review scores on Amazon, when the item in question and the guys who make it weren't the ones to blame, was some low-grade, Busch-league maneuvering, and completely unfair to Kotkin Enterprises and their creation, when it was Ocean, their hired PR firm, whom should've borne more of the brunt of the assault directly. Chances are that Kotkin, having cobbled quite an interesting (and surprisingly functional, albeit not that appealing to myself personally) little accessory, consists primarily of designers and engineers, fields not traditionally known for having more important things to do than be business- or public relations-savvy. Hence why Ocean Marketing was originally brought in, most likely; to handle things like customer issues and promotion, and why the absolute failure in this case at the former task should be solely on Christoforo's head, regardless of how bad a day he was having.

Granted that Ocean seems to consist solely of Paul Christoforo and some other dude hanging out in a sloppy bachelor pad, this whole snafu will likely tank the "company," or at the very least, keep them from getting hired after Kotkin shit-canned them by anyone even tangentially involved in the gaming or tech realms, so I guess things worked out in the end. I'd just like to see some validation of my own reckless optimism in the future, should something similar to this happen again, that keyboard-jockeying mob-joiners might be able to do a quick search before they start burning things down, so as to minimize collateral damage, and make themselves look more intelligent and righteous in their anger. Or, at least, that the ones here at Destructoid are. None of the outlets are to blame, at least none that I follow; if anything, the widespread inability to question why a "Marketting" group was selling a product, as so many seemed to believe, was the root.

Kotkin's statement was well-constructed, to the point, and will hopefully save them face and business in the future, though I also hope their adventures in customs issues have taught them enough to avoid the sort of delays that gave Christoforo the opening to be a complete handjob in the first place, and that whomever they hire on to fill the void left by Ocean is better equipped to handle the situation if it does recur. Hell, they may as well try doing it themselves; when one in-house apology message manages to be worlds better than the collective abuses and backpedaling of a "company" that was supposed to be built on the idea of customer service and interaction, maybe you're better off alone.

And, honestly, I couldn't have asked for a funnier way for the gaming industry to wrap up the year. Thanks, Ocean! Thocean. And kudos to OceanStretagy on Twitter for being a nearly believable troll account, but you're going to have to drop the shift key before you come off as the real deal. Dude already makes himself look bad enough; fake-douching as him is kind of a low blow.

About nekobunone of us since 5:17 PM on 06.29.2007

Hi, I'm Chris, though I've been going by nekobun and variants thereof for so long, I kind of answer to both anymore.

While I've kind of got my own thing going in the realm of indie coverage, at least in the form of playing through (and streaming) (and writing about) the huge backlog I'm developing of games gleaned from various indie bundles, I try to keep my more mainstream, game-related features here, as well as opinion pieces on the industry at large, out of mad love for the 'toid. When I'm not rambling here or trying to be clever in comments threads, you can catch me rambling on Facebook and my Twitter, and trying to be clever in the Dtoid.tv chat.
