Despite having been around since 1997, Konami's "Bemani" series of rhythm games has only made limited penetration in markets outside Japan. Sure, everyone knows about
Dance Dance Revolution to varying extents,
Beatmania IIDX saw a North American release with the IIDX trimmed off, and
Guitar Freaks and
Drum Mania both could be argued as direct inspirations for (and were eventually bundled together as competition against, in the form of
Rock Revolution)
Guitar Hero and
Rock Band (the latter of which eventually added shades of
Keyboard Mania), but that's about all we've seen on this side of the Pacific.
Now that the PS3's been out for a while and come down quite a bit in price, and there are already whispers of the PlayStation 4 on the horizon, the time may be ripe for me to return to Pop'n with that console's little brother. Of course, there's also the ten newer iterations of
Pop'n Music that've come out since then, most of which I imagine have console ports and many of which probably moved to more current hardware.
Well, crap. I never liked having a particularly full wallet, anyway.
And before someone calls me out on it, I'm quite aware I listed some rhythm games in that first friend's collection that aren't from Bemani series. I wasn't implying they were, but rather just running down games that expanded my rhythmic horizons.
