Adventure Game of the Year - 1994

   0
Surprisingly, this year there were only 10 games and only about half of them were good. This was also the year of the second worst King's Quest game ever, the absolute worst being Mask of Eternity. It was a tough call for the #3 spot also. #2 and #1 were pretty easy to pick, though. Let's do it!

#3 - Under a Killing Moon

UAKM is part of the Tex Murphy series, which is a series of noir-themed adventure games with a slight amount of slapstick here and there that's actually pretty clever at times. I only recently got into the series and I was amazed at how well put together this title is and the kind of tech utilized for the year it was released. Funny, innovative, and chock full of clever puzzles and dialogue, this game is a great entry.

#2 - Beneath a Steel Sky

When I first discovered Virgin was making adventure games, I was thrilled. Virgin is excellent at artwork in general, but especially in the field of animation and it really shines through in this awesome dystopian adventure title. Saying too much would spoil it, but suffice to say, it's a very interesting romp chock full of symbolism, great characters and dialogue, and TOUGH AS BALLS DIFFICULTY AND PUZZLES.

There are so many ridiculous ways to die just for doing something so minor wrong that it's...well...ridiculous! That said, it's still a really fun title, especially if you're already used to unforgiving difficulty that's usually prevalent in most adventure games.

#1 - Snatcher (Sega CD)

This was one of Hideo Kojima's oldest projects and wouldn't you know, it's a cyberpunk detective title. As expected, there are tie-ins from previous projects, great writing and characters, and AS MANY CUTSCENES AS HE COULD POSSIBLY THROW AT YOU. I wouldn't say the game is exactly difficult. Really, the only instances you can die easily are the minigames and there aren't many of them sprinkled throughout the game.

The game also isn't very long either. Even still, being a Kojima product, it is absolutely top notch and well worth your time.

Runner Ups

Truly, there were no "bad" games this year. I wasn't a big fan of KQ7, but it could still be praised for its new graphical style (and that's about it). I'd say the runner ups are still worth checking out despite this being a fairly slow year overall and with more meh than must have.

Bizarre Adventures of Woodruff and the Schnibble
Dragonsphere
Dreamweb
King's Quest 7

About gunsageone of us since 2:58 PM on 04.11.2008

I've been gaming since 1987. I used to be a big Nintendo fanboy, then Square jumped the shark, so I followed. Eventually I realized neither Square nor Nintendo were the only companies out there worth following and my collection more or less speaks for itself now. I love to meet up with people on XBL, though I haven't done much online with the Wii. I've also been writing game review articles since 2004 on the old Project Wonderboy, then Morphine Nation, and now back to the new Project Wonderboy and various other sites.

I also help out in writing for a local videogame store website (VGMX). Not much else to say, really, when it comes to gaming. I wouldn't consider myself an expert, but I would say I'm experienced.
