A few people on this site know that I’m a pretty huge Halo dork. I’ve invested more time in the Halo universe than I have any other game, and I‘m not ashamed. I know it’s blasphemous to enjoy Halo in any way.
So how did I take the news of a new single player expansion to Halo? To put it simply, I am excited.
From what I’ve gathered there is still quite a bit of room for this game to be mildly different to Halo 3 despite the fact that it is Halo 3. For one, you’re not Master Chief. You’re a ODST
(Orbital Drop Shock Trooper). There are quite a bit of things Master Chief can do that ODSTs can’t. For one, the Master Chief is an incredibly strong super soldier. He can flip cars and tanks. Secondly, Master Chief has regenerating energy shields.
The covenant are a lot more intimidating when you don’t have regenerating shields, so it‘s fun to speculate how they‘re going to have that work. The trailer did hint at a stealthier game. The soldier’s weapon looked like a modified SMG (sub machine gun). It had a suppressor and scope mounted on it.
It really makes sense to go the stealth route, but who knows. I mean, you can’t go rushing into a room filled with aliens. I’m sure Grunts are easy to take out, but trying to knock down a team of Brutes without shields and “super-soldierness” sounds like it would be quite the task.
The trailer also showed us a bit more of the Superintendent. He’s a cute little guy, isn’t he?
You can see a few of his facial expressions as the trailer progresses, and I’m hoping he becomes a large part of the game. I’d love to have him showing me where to go. It’s a cool way to have arrows in a game without it taking you out of the experience. There’s potential in him.
Halo 2 and Halo 3 promised it would have an epic fight on Earth with the Covenant. It never really happened, and I still feel cheated. Do you remember those late Halo 3 ads with the models? That’s what I wanted from Halo 3, and I’m hoping Halo 3: Recon will give me that. Usually games tend to stay with the same formula, so if they do go on to make this stealthier Halo I hope they can give me what Halo 2 and 3 didn’t. It shouldn’t be too hard. Metal Gear Solid 4 did it to an extent and that game’s all about stealth.
It’s fair to ask if all these Halo games will burn people out. Many of you would gladly admit that 3 was more than enough. For someone like me who’s a fan of the universe, I’m not turned off by it in the least bit. If the games suck, I’ll ignore them and if they’re good, I’ll enjoy them. I do hope they tread lightly. If you’re going to take advantage of a franchise like this, you don’t want to turn the fans away.
